  • Andree-Ann Deschenes – Wanderings
    Andree-Ann Deschenes – Wanderings
    NOV 14 @ THE LOFT 7:30 PM

Wanderings is a collection of seven new piano works written for Andree-Ann Deschenes by Cassio Vianna, Jasnam Daya Singh, Bianca Gismonti, Jovino Santos Neto, Kerry Politzer, Carmen Sandim, and André Mehmari.

Each piece is its own musical space to be explored, each one of them waiting for you to wander around, and maybe stay for a bit.

    www.aadpiano.com

Celebrated by The Whole Note as possessing “a tremendous amount of energy, humour and astonishing talent,” Canadian pianist Andree-Ann Deschenes brings a fresh perspective to piano music. Encouraging listeners to sit back and settle into the music, she pairs her classically-trained sensibilities with elements borrowed from jazz and other inspiring art forms to communicate “just the right amount of drama, power and/or grace” (Mainly Piano) each piece demands.

Placing Latin American music at the forefront of her studies, Deschenes takes to the bench with reverence and intrigue to present vibrant interpretations that spotlight her “intense virtuosity and cool control” (Villa Lobos Magazine). Her commitment to sharing the works of lesser known composers keeps her in pursuit of unearthing regional rarities. Her 2018 studio album, The Ovalle Project, is a direct result of this passion and drive, showcasing the unique and bold works of early twentieth-century Brazilian composer Jayme Ovalle.

Daring to push the boundaries of the classical landscape, Andree-Ann rebels against tradition. From salsa groups and jazz ensembles, to accompanying singer-songwriters, Deschenes has leant her artistry to a variety of projects and performances. Unafraid to explore creative connections in unlikely places, her curiosity once led her to sharing a stage with Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, but that’s a story for another time…

Both educational and performance opportunities have taken Deschenes across North America, from Montreal, to Los Angeles, to her current home, Sault Ste. Marie. Currently on the faculty of the Music & Visual Arts department at Algoma University, Andree-Ann Deschenes has spent over a decade immersed in academia. Having earned an Advanced Diploma in Jazz (Humber College), followed by a Master’s Degree in Afro-Latin music (California State University), and most recently, a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (Claremont Graduate University), Andree-Ann brings considerable experience and enthusiasm to both her lectures and recorded works.

Her new album, Wanderings, is a mosaic of newly commissioned compositions, underscoring Deschenes’ commitment to new piano works influenced by jazz, Brazilian, and classical aesthetics.. Recorded at The Loft Studio in Sault Ste. Marie, the collaborative album features new works by seven esteemed composers, highlighting exploration of the spirit and the spaces it occupies. Wanderings joins Deschenes’ previously released albums on all major retail and streaming platforms February 2024.

    Running time: 63 minutes.

The Doc Talks Soo Greyhounds w. guests HARRY WOLFE & HEC POZZO

Harry Wolfe set the standard for calling Soo Greyhounds play-by-play action from the team’s 1960’s Jr. A days into the OHL during the 1970s and ’80s, before calling it quits. He was also a radio broadcaster and station manager at CKCY, at one time hosting a sports talk program called Locker Room.

Hector Pozzo was a tremendous minor league player in the EHL, AHL and USHL for a number of seasons, from the late ‘1930s into the early ‘1950s, before retiring and getting into a highly successful minor hockey coaching career in the Soo.

On this edition, Harry Wolfe interviews Hec Pozzo, circa 1988, from the Locker Room.

Months prior to The Borderline Entertainment Network going on air with its radio stream & podcast+ station in February of 2020, we had met with Dr. George Shunock to discuss the creation of a podcast series in which he would co-host. The Doc agreed to the concept and we went to work recording. We were able to record three episodes before the advent of the Covid pandemic.

The show was called The Doc Talks Soo Greyhounds.

Dr. George Shunock is well known in Sault Ste. Marie, ON as the man who saved the Greyhounds. He continues to serve as Alternate Governor/Director for the Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club.

  • Leanne Betasamosake Simpson – Live Like The Sky
Leanne Betasamosake Simpson – Live Like The Sky

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson is a renowned Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg  musician,  writer and academic, who has been widely recognized as one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation. Her work breaks open the boundaries between story and song—bringing audiences into a rich and layered world of sound, light, and sovereign creativity.

Live Like The Sky is an act of re-worlding, a record of struggle, a nuanced and complex shoreline combining a surprising influence from formative alternative musics with a vital Nishnaabe presence to create a fugitive and expansive space of relationship and affirmation.

Musically, Live Like The Sky draws directly from Simpson’s personal history, growing up in rural southwestern Ontario and discovering alternative music, punk, new wave, and goth through the static and poor reception of the distant alternative station broadcasting from Toronto; this music offered an escape from the ubiquitous country music and hard rock, offered difference, offered possibility; offered an otherwise. On previous albums, music was written to completed poetry, here Simpson inverts the process, writing lyrics and vocal lines to songs guided by those formative musical influences. It was a process of developing her own voice and sound. In the struggle to arrive at this artistic vision she credits Status/Non-Status and Zoon, as well as their collaborative Ombiigizi project, with finding the sound that lands in our present moment as both a rebellion and a homespace. As the material was workshopped and developed in studio with Jonas Bonnetta, Caylie Runciman, Ansley Simpson, Tanner Pare and Nick Ferrio, artistic decisions were labored over, and in the space between the aesthetics of the lyrics and the aesthetics of the music, Live Like the Sky was born, carrying the undercurrents of resistance alongside a celebration of (still) being here anyway. There was dancing in the studio during playback.

The album is the first new musical work from Leanne Betasamosake Simpson since her Polaris Music Prize short-listed Theory Of Ice in 2021, and joins a growing body of emergent creations from the Michi Saagiig Nishinaabeg writer, scholar, artist, including the recently published Theory Of Water: Nishnaabe Maps To The Times Ahead, the letter-exchange-as-manifesto Rehearsals For Living (with Robin Maynard), the novel Noopiming, and essay/lecture/collaboration with beavers, A Short History Of The Blockade. Present in all of these is a deep engagement and response to the world, the wild fire smoke, the genocides, the driving fascism.

  • Russ Hilderley & SSM Radio History – The Smart As Trees Podcast
Russ Hilderley & SSM Radio History – The Smart As Trees Podcast

Russ Hilderley was there when radio made its mark in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with CKCY, established in the 1950s by Carmen Greco. A few years later, when the opportunity presented itself to be an owner of a radio station, Russ stepped up and CFYN broadcast in Sault Ste. Marie from 1977 to 1992.

Following the change of ownership in 1977, the majority of the on-air staff and news departments of Hyland and Algonquin stayed with Huron Broadcasting, leaving Gilder Broadcasting to find a new staff for its two stations.

On February 1, 1977, CFYN signed on with an on-air line-up that included Norman M from 6:00 to 10:00 am. Joe Petrolo was the main news presenter and Randy Russon was the sports director. Russ Hilderley, president and CEO of Gilder, hosted Reaching Out, a daily phone-in program from 10:00 am to noon. Other hosts included Fred Edwards from noon to 2:00 pm and Brian W. Martin from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. From 6:00 pm on, the station broadcast a variety of CBC and syndicated programming. The overnight program was simulcast from CHAS-FM.

Bob Wood was the morning show host over a three-year period from 1979 to 1982. “Woody” brought an outrageous style and humour that Sault radio had not really heard to that point. Wood subsequently moved to North Bay, where he was the federal member of parliament for Nipissing from 1988 to 2004.

News director John Campbell, who joined the station in 1979, introduced listeners to the daily “Campbell Comment”. His commentaries ranged from goings on at Algoma Steel to the Language Resolution and beyond and often generated talk in the community and occasionally rebuttals and headlines in the local papers.

The many magnificent rivers that flow into the Great Lakes bring life and harmony to the entire watershed but now under more than a century of industrial stress the song does not remain the same.

    Great Lakes Odyssey World

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the Great Lakes Odyssey World is a multi-national effort to strengthen and explore our relationship with the natural wonders known as the Great Lakes.

In this part of the project, we have created a multi-part audio series looking at the way the Great Lakes shape our lives, our livelihoods, our health and our culture.

50 years ago, folks in the media and elsewhere were ready to declare the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie “dead.”

The thought so appalled citizens in Canada and the United States, they forced their national governments to act.

Because, of course, the Great Lakes shape the life of both Canada and the United States. And, of course, the Great Lakes are a single system stretching from Duluth to Ottawa and down the St. Lawrence seaway. What happens to any of the Lakes will soon happen to the others.

So, the politicians of 50 years ago negotiated the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, “for the purpose of restoring, protecting and enhancing the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes basin.”

50 years later, we can see the agreement worked. We see more fish, cleaner water, and less pollution. Unlike the early settlers and colonials, who mostly saw the Lakes as a resource to tap, we now recognize, like the First Nations, the Lakes are part of our identity. They shape our relationships, our songs and celebrations of place, the way we eat, how we play, and what we make, or sell, or harvest.

50 years since the wake-up call of a burning river, Great Lakes Odyssey wants to learn how we live and love, hurt and restore the incredible gift which is the Great Lakes.

We will explore Great Lakes art and artistic expression, and meet the artists, writers, musicians who make it. We will also dip into Great Lakes history and lore – and learn from the people who have been here the longest and know it the best: The People of the Three Fires, the Anishinaabek.

On our Odyssey around the Great Lakes, we will also hear from people working to prevent poisonous algal blooms or stop the spread of invasive species. We will meet visionaries undoing decades of development that hardened shorelines, emptied marshes and wetlands, and destroyed critical spawning grounds. We will talk to people working to ensure all beings have access to pure drinking water.

Because none of us can live without pure drinking water.

In this wondrous place we call the Great Lakes, we know we are blessed by these Sweet Water Seas. We claim them as our H.O.M.E.S. as the emotionally accurate mnemonic says. They are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior, and they are our HOMES.

As long as humans have lived in, and of and through the Lakes, people have told stories about them, sung about them, and gloried in this great gift of the long departed Ice Age. Left by glaciers thousands of years ago, they are the World’s storehouse of fresh water. If they are drained… or ruined… or damaged, they can never be replaced.

So, as we travel around the Great Lakes basin, we want to see how we are doing – what we are doing – how we’re feeling and what we’re learning as we try to live as lovers and restorers – and children and family – of the being whom the Anishinaabek call Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin, the five freshwater seas.

We hope to galvanize, inspire, and motivate you to strengthen, support and steward the Great Lakes to a beautiful and healthy future.

So please join us on this magical, dare we say “magical mystery tour” of the Great Lakes basin and Great Lakes culture.
