Backup Strategies with Jim Goldstein
In this episode of TheFIX, photographer Jim Goldstein joins host Seán Duggan for a conversation about chasing moonbows in Yosemite and backup strategies for keeping your images safe from hard drive failure or other catastrophes. This is a bit different than our normal post-processing fare, but it does deal with things we do with our images after the shoot. And ensuring that you have a good backup strategy is arguably one of the most important things you can do with your photos after you download them to your computer. Hards drives can and do fail. Preparing for this will save you a lot of tech heartache and hassle. In addition to being an experienced nature, landscape and travel photographer, Jim is also the marketing director for the online backup service Backblaze, and he definitely has his act together in terms of having a very solid backup strategy. We talk about his back-up system which includes mirrored hard drives as well as online backups, and he shares some news about the new Backblaze B2 backup service for large amounts of data that is currently in public beta. At one point, we also do fierce podcasting battle with the audio scourge of an invading leafblower.
