In this show @Frederick Van Johnson @Steve Brazill and @PhotoJoseph briefly discuss TWiP’s hiatus, then tear into GoPro and the failure of their Karma Drone. Then we’ll discuss low-light photography tips and finally we’ll round things out with a panel discussion around their favorite cameras.

TWiP welcomes Renee Robyn to the TWiP family. She will be taking the reigns of TheFIX and turning the ship in an entirely new direction!

Photoshop Video Compositing with Seán Duggan

In this episode of TheFIX we complete the compositing project from Episode 081, taking the steampunk radio composite and using it to explore video compositing in Photoshop. Host Seán Duggan shows how to use common Photoshop compositing skills such as layers, layer masks, smart objects, and blending modes to combine stills and video clips to create a video composite. The great thing about working with video compositing in Photoshop is that you can utilize a lot of skills with layrs, selections, masks and smart objects, that you may already know. Signing Off

This will be my last episode hosting TheFIX. I've been hosting the show for a year now, after taking over from the original host, Jan Kabili. It's been a great ride and over the course of 54 episodes I've really enjoyed bringing you a range of guests to talk about a variety of post-processing topics covering Photoshop, Lightroom, mobile apps, plug-ins, and backup strategies. I want to give a shout-out to Frederick Van Johnson and thank him for the opportunity to host this show. And if you're not familiar with some of the other photography podcasts on TWIP, definitely check them out. There are many cool shows with talented hosts. It's a great resource! TheFIX will be going on a hiatus but a show about post processing is certain to make it's way back to TWIP in the near future, so stay tuned! Thanks to everyone who tuned in to listen to or view the show. I appreciate it! As I like to say at the end of the semester to students in my digital imaging classes...Go Forth and Pixelate!

Personal Project Profile: Apocalyptech by Jeff Shaffer

In this episode of TheFIX, commercial photographer Jeff Shaffer provides an in-depth look at Apocalyptech, a personal project featuring a series of intricate and detailed Photoshop composites. Apocalyptech was created as Jeff's thesis project while earning his Master of Professional Studies in Digital Photography degree from New York’s prestigious School of Visual Arts. In the interview we take a look at the entire process for creating this personal project: Developing the initial concept for the story, looking at the work of other photographers who provided visual inspiration for the look and feel of the series, the creation of rough storyboard-like sketches that were the first visuals for the story and informed how the background composites were created, as well as the casting of models to play the main characters, and photographing the models in the studio to match the lighting and perspective in background plates that Jeff had already created. We wrap things up with a look at one of the layered Photoshop files and Jeff deconstructs how the composite was put together.

About Our Guest

Jeff Shaffer’s advertising photography has garnered numerous awards from art director’s clubs and other publication design groups. Based in Philadelphia, he has worked on national ad campaigns and annual reports for such prominent clients as Pfizer, Neiman Marcus, Ralph Lauren, Tanqueray, and Heineken. Jeff’s fine-art photography draws its inspiration from futuristic cinema and graphic novels, relying heavily on post-production manipulation in the style of computer graphics. He refined those skills while earning his Master of Professional Studies in Digital Photography degree from New York’s prestigious School of Visual Arts.

Photoshop Compositing: Steampunk Radio

In this project-based episode of TheFIX, host Seán Duggan uses elements from four photos to create a simple Photoshop composite of a steampunk radio. If you are interested in learning more about compositing, there are a lot of essential Photoshop skills covered in this show, including retouching, image mirroring, transformations, selections, working with shape tools to create paths for selections, layers,  layer masks, smart objects, and layer styles. This is actually part 1 of a two part project; in a subsequent episode, the steampunk radio will be used as an element in a video composite. Note: The final image in the gallery below is an enhanced version that was completed after the recording of this show. The radio composite created in this episode was added into an old camera case and further modified with additional elements. A deconstruction of this final version will be shown in Part 2 of this project, which will air in two or three weeks.

Photoshop Toning & Color Tinting

In this episode of TheFIX, host Seán Duggan shares some tips and techniques for creating color toning and tinting (i.e., "hand coloring") effects for black & white images. Beyond those key topics, this show also features useful tips on adjustment layers, layer masks, blending modes, and alternate ways of applying color tinting. Starting with a historical image from the Library of Congress, we start off with a look at how to create a basic sepia toning look. From there, we mix it up a bit and use multiple sepia layers and layer masks to create a varied and irregular toning effect, as well as a sepia look that also applies a darkening effect that contributes a tonal richness to the image. Next we shift gears and go over the basic "dance steps" for using adjustment layers and layer masks to create a hand colored look.

The hand coloring for the women factory workers photo was created after this episode was recorded, using the same type of techniques shown in the episode on the puma fountain photo. You can see the result below, as well as screenshots of the final layers panel for the colorized photo.

Alan shows some of his favorite concert images, and also shares some cool processing tips, including creating default Lightroom process interpretations on a per-camera basis that will also work in Camera Raw, and using the Library panel in Photoshop to easily add personal branding to your images.

Alan Hess is a San Diego-based photographer specializing in concert and live-event photography. From small club shows to big arenas, Alan enjoys the fast pace of shooting on the fly, the rush of the house lights going down, and the drive to capture the "show" in images of the first three songs. Alan is currently the house photographer for a large concert venue in Southern California and when he isn't out shooting concerts, he is writing photography books. He is the author of fifteen books covering everything from Concert Photography to Pet Photography including books on the Nikon Creative Lighting System, Night and Low Light Photography and three books on getting the most from your iPad. Alan has contributed to Photoshop User magazine and has been a part of the Instructor Dream Team at Photoshop World since 2009.
