A long time ago in a Colony far, far away…Deerskin Wars! Okay so it wasn’t that long ago, and it was actually right here in Georgia, but there _were _deerskin wars. In this episode, Ken and Glen discuss the 18th-century trade of deerskin for manufactured goods and how competition in this extremely lucrative endeavor with rivalries between England, France, and Spain as well as rivalries between Creek, Choctaw, and Cherokees at times erupted into a trade war – and shooting war!

The culture of the Anglo-Saxons at its apogee produced artistic, scholarly, literary and martial achievements that were recognized throughout Northern Europe and much of the Continent...and even though J.R.R. Tolkien never explicitly said that the Riders of Rohan were Anglo-Saxons on horses, you can tell. Join Ken and Glen as they discuss the rich Anglo-Saxon culture that died when King Harold II died defending the land of the English from the Bastard Norman William. Any mention of Tolkien is purely coincidental.

In the popular imagination, the De Soto Expedition through the American Southeast is a bunch of Spaniards bumbling about in search of Gold - which is only partially true. In reality, there were Spanish, Moroccan African, Portuguese, French, Italian, and English men (as well as Spanish serving women and enslaved Native American women!) on the expedition. They were quite organized, and De Soto was looking to found a colony (not just find gold.) While he was still very definitely looking for gold...things didn't quite work out for De Soto, due in large part to a Mississippian Paramount Chief named Tuscaloosa. Join Ken and Glen as they discuss the Hernando De Soto Expedition of 1539-1543.
