Ten years ago Frenchman Gildas Laplaud left the fishing industry and opened the Happy Go Lucky toy shop on Clonakilty’s main street. The ocean’s loss was the children of Clon’s gain. Gildas chats about sold-out Christmas toys, competing with online merchants, board games, Irish jigsaws, Lego, Playmobil and stocking fillers.

The West Cork Animal Welfare Group in Ownahincha has helped neglected and abused animals since 1999 and it is still going strong largely thanks to volunteers and fundraising efforts.
