Welcome to Part 2 of Braiding Sweetgrass. If you didn't listen to Part 1, don't worry. This is a non-linear episodic series so it really doesn't matter. I decided to talk to two different people about the same book because it's just that great of a book and its impossible to talk too much about it.

This week we get real witchy with my friend same in the first installment of this two part thing on the Book Braiding Sweetgrass my Robin Kimmerer. I can't even describe this book because its so cool and weird. I talked to my friend same in this episode and in the next one I talk to another friend and we go over things that are completely different. But still about the same boook. How can I do two episodes on this book you ask? cuz I can and I want to!

In a departure from my normal format, I dive into a Q &A with my cousin Aileen Plough @howtotellastory about her career as a pediatric focused Speech and Language Pathologist and how to engage our kids in language arts at a young age (even infants!) to give them a great baseline for reading comprehension and learning. We even talk about how I met my husband! Its a great dish session.

If you are a crime novel reader, get yourself a copy. In, fact, get all three and spend the week with Manon, our anti-heroine detective.

This week, I sit down with my friend Madeline and we talk about In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, a masterpiece of a book that challenges form and prose to bring you a memoir that transcends person and place. Making the personal universal. This is a brave book that addresses the realities of domestic violence and abuse in the queer community. Its delicious. Grab a copy, then devour and then hunger for more Machado. She is a literary powerhouse.

Delighted to bring you our first non-fiction book review in the series. My guest Laura is a long time friend, she suggested this book because she is just as obsessed as I am with gardening and homesteading. Laura is a tech entrepreneur that is always serving incredibly creative solutions to the world's problems. Her company Give inKind is a fast growing platform that helps people help their friends and family through illness, big life transitions, and death, even if they can't reach them physically, which is all of us right now. 

Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; A Year of Food Life is a biography of the year that Barbara and her family pledged to eat only what they could grow or source from their county in rural Virginia. It is a delightful collection of essays written by Barbara, her teenage daughter, and her husband covering everything from the science and impact of food production in America to recipes for Asparagus and Eggplant. Beautiful and enchanting prose ensue.

This week my sister-in-law and I read Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. An addictive fantasy novel that is nothing short of expansive and beautiful. Truely one of the most creative fantasy books I've ever read. A real feminist one too!

In this episode I get to discuss the beautiful short story called A Love Story by Samantha Hunt with my friend Vera. The story is from Samantha Hunt's collection that came out in 2017 called In the Dark Dark, which she describes in an interview as "a map of humans at night." Preach girl.

I highly recommend reading or listening to this story before this conversation. It's just such a good story and a quick read or listen.
