Ryan Poles made a statement when he took over the Chicago Bears. It was clear at the time. There was no room for doubt. He said this team was going to build through the draft. That was his goal moving forward. Stacking homegrown talent is how he believes an organization must operate to succeed in the NFL. After watching the Bears cut down their roster to 53 players ahead of the regular season, it’s impossible to question Poles anymore. Of the 53 players that exited the 2021 season on the log in January, only 22 remain. That is a massive turnover in one off-season. Then there is the fact that 13 of the 31 fresh faces are rookies. That includes ten draft picks and three undrafted free agents. Here are the day’s moves as the Bears assemble their roster and practice squad for the regular season.
Roquan Smith’s ramp-up reached the next stage Tuesday when the Bears star linebacker returned to team drills for the first time since ending his hold-in Saturday. On the first play of 11-on-11, Smith burst through the line and blew up a David Montgomery run for a loss of 3 with the help of Robert Quinn. The entire defensive sideline went nuts after Smith’s play, and someone yelled, “He’s back!” With the drama done, for now, the Bears’ defense is happy to have their best player back on the field. “I would just say everybody has a sense of confidence, a different sense of confidence when he’s out there, especially me being, like you said, playing with him for two years,” cornerback Jaylon Johnson said of having Smith back. “There are some unspoken things, and we don’t always have to communicate certain things. We just kind of can see things the same." Bears linebacker Roquan Smith went public with his desire to be traded on Tuesday morning, and General Manager Ryan Poles offered a response from the team at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. Poles said he was disappointed that things have progressed to this point because he loves Smith as a person and a player and “thought we’d be in a better situation” by this point in the summer. Poles said that he thought the offer of a new contract for Smith showed “him the respect he deserves,” but that a deal has to make sense for both sides and “obviously we’re not at that point.”
Zach LaVine said from the beginning of the 2022 offseason that he planned to approach his first-ever unrestricted free agency with an open mind. In the end, that process brought him back to the Chicago Bulls.

The Nets have talked with the Lakers, and I believe there has been back-and-forth, some communication. You look at where there’s cap space right now, and a team like San Antonio could be a facilitator in, let’s say, a Russell Westbrook for Kyrie Irving deal between the groups. They have cap space. Now, you must incentivize them at a level, and I think that’s the willingness of the Lakers to incentivize a deal with multiple draft picks. I think that’s part of the reason that the deal hasn’t gone anywhere yet. Earlier on NBA Today, Woj and Windhorst spoke about how the Nets have yet to see an agreement they like for Durant, with Woj even suggesting that things could change between now and late September. Asked by Malika Andrews if there was a chance that KD could be on the Nets training camp at the end of September, Woj said it’s possible.
