THEY LIVE. It's a John Carpenter machine gun party up in here! Don't underestimate the present day relevance of this 1988 action packed, sci-fi juggernaut and its socioeconomic prophesying of the rich and powerful, and their instatiable urge to control your world. Sound heavy? Cue Roddy Piper, a WWF brawler with a Merriam-Webster sized canon of one liners that made Rowdy the greatest heel wrestling would ever know. And a man posessing a screen presence like no other walk on leading man of the era. This role, and Roddy's portrayal of Nada, would wet the thirst of many in the wrestling ranks to take a swing at life outside the servitude of Vince McMahon and his backbreaking circus. No one did it like Rowdy Roddy Piper though, in and out of the ring. And pairing him with Keith David, an acting force of nature....WOAH.
This movie was a thinly veiled political commentary by John Carpenter on the economic policies of Ronald "McDonald" Reagan and his class-clearing, clown-shoe'd fiscal fiasco known as Reaganomics. Was it a coincidence that John employed cold and seemingly unfeeling aliens to infiltrate and control the population by feeding them subliminal messages to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo through mass media…..hmmm.
Writing this summary is making feel like Nada after taking off his all-seeing Hoffman lenses. So without further ado….blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda and gabba gabba hey, gabba gabba hey.
