Things That Affect Your Depression - Triggers

Listen Later

We all develop depression for a different reason, but many of the day-to-day things that make it worse & trigger it are common ground that a lot of us deal with. I'm here to share 7 things that negatively affect our depression that is helpful to be aware of to help develop needed coping mechanisms.

Show Notes:
I struggle with depression. I’m sure I have been struggling with it longer than I realized, but I started to realize it when I was in college. I don’t struggle as much as I used to because of my investment & time in talk therapy, my own self-help journey of reading books, finding helpful content online & discovering what works best for me in terms of medicine, which turned out to be something more natural.

And I know there are many other people that listen here that are struggling with depression. It’s a tough journey, feels like a roller coaster some of the time & can be confusing if you don’t know what is affecting it & possibly contributing to more pain than normal.

A while back, a listener asked me to talk about triggers for depression because I created an episode talking about triggers for anxiety. And I was hesitant to do so because diving into the inner workings of depression is a much deeper well than anxiety. And depression starts from so many more places. But I decided that it was important enough for someone to ask me to talk about it & I finally found a way that I feel will be helpful, will do it justice & doesn’t involve me talking about how depression comes about.

Today I want to talk to you about the things in life that can affect depression. Like I mentioned, depression can begin in our lives due to so many different experiences, but there is some common ground in what can affect it in a day-to-day kind of way. So I’m going to share with you what affects depression negatively, which can also be seen as a trigger:

  1. Trauma & Stressful Events
  2. Rejection & Failures
  3. Negative Thought Patterns (if you get stuck in your thoughts, continue to believe negative thoughts without examining if there is any truth in what you’re thinking .)
  4. Lack of Sleep (clinical studies have shown that less than 6 hours increases the risk of depression. Majority of depressed people have insomnia which creates a cyclical effect for this & some sleep excessively.)
  5. Illness (it’s a heavy burden to carry when you have an illness that takes so much from you or you don’t even realize you have any issues that are causing you internal sickness that is also contributing to depression)
  6. Seasonal Changes (SAD is usually worse during the fall & winter because there is less sunlight. )
  7. Relationship Issues (break-ups, arguments, separations, power issues, abuse)

The best way for you to become aware of what triggers you is to develop self-awareness & keep track of what affects your depression, what causes you to feel worse & feel better. Actually, keep track of those things somewhere & see what the correlations are.
