Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Duke University recently wrote in the Wall Street Journal,  most of us vastly underestimate the percentage of our pre-retirement income we’ll need, POST retirement.. Glenn Ruffenach, a retirement columnist for MarketWatch and the Wall Street Journal, said that 2018 was the first year-- ever--that readers overwhelmingly disagreed with him about delaying retirement benefits. In fact, many Americans are grabbing benefits at 62 because they want to make the most of their Social Security dollars while they’re still relatively young and fit. Or, as one reader put it: “You never know when your health will turn south, so ‘Spend it while you’re able’. Another consideration--you never know if Social Security will always pay full benefits. Today, we'll find out if it is smarter to take benefits early or delay, and several alternative strategies that have caught on in a big way!  MASTERING MONEY is on the air!!

Reinvesting dividends is one of the most powerful tools available for boosting investment returns over time. It’s not opinion, it is traceable, trackable, mathematical fact. Without reinvesting dividends,  $1,000 dollars invested on January first of 1993 in the MSCI World Index, would have grown to $3,231 dollars by March of 2018-- a 324% increase representing a 5.9% compounded return. But by REINVESTING all dividends, the same one thousand dollars would have grown to $6,416, nearly twice the amount! With dividends reinvested, buying the identical stocks, the annualized return would have been 8.3% compounded and  total return of over 640%! It is a fact: The Social Security trust funds are on a path to run out of money by 2034, leaving only new tax money to pay benefits for the rapidly growing number of retirees. The American population is simply aging too fast!  Official projections show the Social Security trust funds will run out of money entirely by 2034, at which point Social Security will only be able to pay out as much as it collects in payroll taxes.  Will Congress solve the problem? The Wall Street Journal reports that real estate is becoming a problem sector as interest rates rise. Publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trusts—known as REITS—are impacted negatively by rising rates, causing a Catch 22 for real estate trusts. The better the economy does, the higher interest rates could go which in turn could hurt real estate, and eventually, the market as a whole!!
