Thinking Out Loud is a place to digest audibly the things we tend to think through silently. We'll look at a variety of complex issues from a variety of points of view, not necessarily to get to "right answers" but to build empathy and perspective.
Today I am joined by Dr. Felicia Su Wong, a cultural sociologist of media and digital technologies, currently serving as professor of sociology at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. We discuss her book, OUT NOW!, Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age. Our technologies are forming us whether we know it or not, so Felicia and I discuss the importance of intentionality when it comes to our devices. We also discuss ways we can incorporate "counterliturgies" so that we are formed into the person of Christ. I'm sure you'll enjoy this conversation so listen away and then go and get a copy of her book.

Today I am joined by Stu Garrard formerly of Delirious and now the creative mind behind The Beatitudes Project. Stu's desire to live the Jesus way and show others how they can take part in this upside down kingdom is truly infectious. I appreciate him and his work greatly, and I'm sure that you will as well! Be sure to check out the website (linked above) where you can get yourself a copy of the book, listen to the album, and even engage with the small group curriculum.

Brian Zahnd is the founding pastor of Word of Life church in St. Joseph, Missouri. Through 40 years of pastoring, Brian has experience his own version of deconstruction and watched others go through theirs. In his most recent book, When Everything Is On Fire: Faith Forged From The Ashes, Brian extends an invitation to move beyond the crisis of faith toward the journey of reconstruction. This conversation about our current cultural moment in light of Church History was full of wisdom and insight. Brian has helped me in my own de/reconstruction process and I'm sure this book will help you in yours.
Catch more of Brian's writing on his website and give him a follow on twitter.

We are now in a time where the church isn’t by default a place people go to find purpose and meaning and pastors are people who are given the benefit of the doubt in being wiser and closer to truth. The question at the core of this reality is how then should Christians operate in a world like this? John and I try to get there...

On this week's episode, Rob Cook and I are joined by Alex DeMarco. Alex is a project editor for Baker Academic and Brazos Press, my college buddy, and author of this article: Sacrificing LGBTQ+ Well-Being and More on the Altar of an Inerrant Bible. This was published after Cairn University made the decision to disband their entire Graduate and Undergraduate Social Work programs. Rob, Alex, and I discuss the article, Cairn's decision, and the inerrancy of the Bible.

Buckle up! This is such a fun episode. I LOVED talking with Kevin. As you'll hear, I asked him to come on to talk about why we don't talk about money. We did that, but we did so much more. We talk about humility and pride, the role we play in determining our fate, the experience vs the reason of faith, and how to recognize and defeat the powers and principalities in your life. ENJOY!

At this point, you've all heard about the Texas Abortion Law. I am joined by recent Baylor Law graduate, Tamer Abouras, to ask him to break down the specifics of the law. We also both share our general approach to the abortion conversation and our hopes for Christian involvement moving forward.
