Thinking Outside The Long Box

We had the pleasure to speak about a crazy cool comic book from Boom! Studios!! If you are not a regular reader of comic books from Boom! Studios, then you are definitely missing out! You should hit their YouTube account in order to check out their phenomenal comic book trailers! We had the opportunity to speak with Lee Bermejo about his book, A Vicious Circle!

“A Vicious Circle focuses on Shawn Thacker, a futuristic assassin in pursuit of his rival Ferris. Both men are cursed with a unique ability – whenever they take a life, they immediately travel backward or forward through time.”

Imagine being an assassin as your main job, but when you kill someone, you have no idea where you’ll end up. Do you continue being an assassin, not knowing where in time you’re going to end up? Imagine killing someone, and then being right in front of a T-Rex, or the Jetsons! The comic book has such a fun concept, and is a great read, make sure that you have it in your normal comic book pull!!

We had the opportunity to speak with comic book writer Desiree Proctor! She was attending San Diego Comic Con 2023 with the amazing Fanbase Press! We have spent years speaking with the creators of Fansbase, and this interview is no different! Desiree spoke to us about her book, Nuclear Power!

“October of 1962. The Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union is at its peak when the unthinkable happens: nuclear war.  Sixty years later, the remaining 13 states rose from the ashes to form the American Union, governed by the authoritarian Joint Chiefs of Staff and protected by a border wall to keep out nuclear radiation . . . and the individuals who were enhanced by it.  Nuclear Power is a darkly poignant alternate history tale that posits the lengths to which a government will go to protect (or deceive) its citizens.  When the Joint Chiefs’ dark secrets are revealed, will survivors on both sides of the wall join forces to fight for their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, or will their differences forever divide them?”

Our final chapter in this spooky series, MAYBE one of the best of the films? There are five in this series, so it’s up to you to decide which of those is your favorite, and in what order you rank them! We are talking about the final chapter in the Insidious series, Insidious The Red Door!

“Josh Lambert heads east to drop his son, Dalton, off at school. However, Dalton’s college dream soon becomes a living nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.”

As with any film series that has many sequels, there are going to be some that aren’t as good as the original. In this case, even the ones that aren’t as good, are still worth taking the time to watch! This movie won’t make much sense unless you watch the first two chapters, but you should definitely give it a go!

October’s spooky season continues with even more Insidious than the last episode!! BUT, because we are reviewing these episodes in order from their respective universe, and not chronological order, today’s episode is all about the very first film in the series. It was aptly title, Insidious!

“Parents (Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne) take drastic measures when it seems their new home is haunted and their comatose son is possessed by a malevolent entity.”

If you’re watching these in universal order, then you’re already pretty familiar with a lot of the faces that you get to see throughout this movie, PLUS the timing of certain things makes more sense. This is the story of what one mom and dad will do, in order to try and get their son back. How far would you go in order to try and keep you son safe? Even if the danger lies beyond the mortal plane? Hopefully you’re keeping up with these movies, or are catching up at this point, because they really are worth the watch!

It’s the beginning of spooky season AND the beginning of our fifth season! With the 500th episode comes some sweet new music for the podcast, and a month full of spooky episodes, mixed in with our normal set of fun episodes!! Our first set of spooky episodes, will be focusing on the complete insidious universe!! Today we’re talking about Chapter 3 and Chapter 4!!

“When teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) senses that her late mother is trying to contact her, she seeks help from gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). However, Elise’s tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities. After Quinn is attacked by a malevolent entity, her father (Dermot Mulroney) pleads with Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into The Further — where she finds a powerful demon with an insatiable craving for human souls.”

“Brilliant parapsychologist Elise Rainier receives a disturbing phone call from a man who claims that his house is haunted. Even more disturbing is the address — 413 Apple Tree Lane in Five Keys, N.M. — the home where Elise grew up as a child. Accompanied by her two investigative partners, Rainier travels to Five Keys to confront and destroy her greatest fear — the demon that she accidentally set free years earlier.”

Every once in a while we go outside of our bubble, to talk about something that we think is worth it, or is fun. In this case, today’s topic hit both of those things for us. PLUS, there are different aspects of this game that tie into the comic book world that we like to live in! We had the chance to sit down with the two awesome creators of this new card game, and had the chance to play a round or two!! The name of the game is BAM!

” In Earth Tau, you are a high-ranking super in charge of deploying teams throughout the known and unknown. Outscore your rival(s) before they can claim victory. Earth Tau is an ever evolving playground of in house systems, real world data, and creativity; all curated to develop great stories, new ideas, and new ways to deliver that content. We are also gamers, and felt something was missing in the market.”

Look out for all new sets and cards to come in the future, plus all of the stories that are behind every single card! That’s a lot of world building that is being done, which you know, means that the creators are taking the game super seriously, so that you enjoy every minute, and in every way!

Still crushing it during San Diego Comic Con with some awesome interviews!! Boom! Studios is a great partner when it comes to interviews, especially during comic cons! One of these awesome interviews was with their team behind Sirens of the City! A comic book that I have subsequently added to my pull list! We spoke with Joanne Starer and Khary Randolph!

“New York City. 1980s.

Runaway teen Layla struggles to survive the mean streets, far from home. Meanwhile, every supernatural creature–from sirens to incubi–descend upon the city…all in vying for control of Layla and the child-to-be she never wanted growing inside her.”

This is a really cool concept! A concept that, sure, has been done before, but not in the way that Joanne and Khary are doing it now! Not only do we get a main character who is going through life, trying not to become the person that she was destined to be, but we also get a heavy dose of monsters in the form of sirens and incubi! Plus, Khary does a phenomenal job of recreating New York for this world! A monthly story, make sure that you pick it up at your local comic book shop!

At our roots, we started as a comic book podcast! We’ve evolved since that point to include other topics, but we absolutely love going back to our home and talk about some awesome books! Today’s interview is exactly that! We had the chance to sit down and speak with Jason Lego, an artist, and his new project Sewer Boyz!

“Ink & Drink Long Beach has plunged deep within the sewers of Southern California (and beyond) to gather their largest roster of artists to bake a new pizza-powered comic book collaboration!

SEWER BOYZ celebrates the classic New York City ninja fight which will be presented as a softcover comic book containing art by 31 artists in 120 black and white pages, including a pin-up section , and a sticker!”

With over 31 artist, this is a true collaboration, and it ended with such a crazy cool book!! You can tell that Jason has a lot of love for this project, and the fact that this was funded already, and absolutely killed expectations definitely helped!!

Sometimes we take a side step out of the “pop culture” world, and into a different world that we are interested in. Now, for all intents and purposes, this still might be pop culture, and like I said, is only a side step away from normality, but today’s interview comes from the world of wrestling!! During San Diego Comic Con, you never know who is going to show up, and who you might run into! In today’s case, we ran into somebody that Albie has met in the past, during his past life as a wrestling referee! We got the honor to speak with champion, Leva Bates!

“Leva Bates is an American professional wrestler. She is best known for her time with All Elite Wrestling. She also had a successful tenure on the independent circuit, most notably for Shimmer Women Athletes. She has also appeared in WWE on their developmental territory NXT under the ring name Blue Pants.”

It’s always fun talking to and meeting wrestlers! It’s something that myself and Albi have been huge fans of since we were both young! Leva tells us all about her start up, plus her time in the WWE and AEW!
