Episode 1: Geopolitical background.

This discusses the geo-political status of the Australiasian region including the Dutch East Indies, New Holland and New Zealand prior to Cook's first voyage from a European "Doctrines of Discovery" perspective. The Dutch had a fairly solid claim of "first discovery" over New Holland. This discusses the basis of Dutch claims, and touches on a possible catalyst that got the ball rolling for the British to move-in, and how the origins of the Australian doctrine of terra nullius may trace back to Abel Tasman.

In 2017, the Referendum Council held a consultation process for "First Nations" in Australia, and the result was the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The Uluru Statement is a proposal to decolonise Australia as a British colonial territory.

There has been some criticism about the Referendum Council process. But the process has been very carefully designed to meet international  precedent for decolonisation. The Referendum Council have used another successful decolonisation consultation as a benchmark - the Musyawarah consultation that led West Papua to become part of Indonesia. 

Diplomatic recognition is a fundamental part of customary International law, and it's very useful for Aboriginal Sovereignty activists to know about. In this episode, I talk about some of the basics of how it works.
