  • Are we Sailing Right into a Voting Disaster (Politics for the People)

Voting is at the Center of our Democracy.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guests are Tim Apicella and Winston Welch.

The ongoing Republican effort to undo voting in this country may not be on the top of the news every day, but it certainly should be.

Our panel takes a look at state action in Republican states like Texas for example to suppress voting by voters of color, the bills that have been adopted in those states, the extraordinary effect of redistricting on the coming elections, the removal of voting officials, the death threats made to those officials and to our poll workers, the status and prospects of the two voting rights bills in Congress, the likelihood of a big or bigger turnout in 2022 or 2024, the emergence of activist organizations dedicated on the one hand to call for fair voting, and on the other to oppose it, the reactions of voters, and how all of this will affect the elections in 2022 and 2024 and in between, and how it will affect our democracy and the future of our society.

  • County TAT a Threat to Recovery (Community Matters)

Grassroot Institute Opposes TAT Surcharge.  The host for this show is Jay Fidell.  The guest is Joe Kent.

Grassroot Institute warns that Hawaii's economy is in no condition to sustain a tax increase on visitors to the islands.

The Institute opposes a 3% transient accommodations tax for the City and County of Honolulu, the proceeds of which would be divided between the county's general fund, a special account to "mitigate the impact of visitors on public facilities” and the county's transit fund for the rail project.

Joe Kent, the Institute executive vice president of the Institute, said that with the elimination of the county's share of the state's 10.25% TAT, it is understandable that Honolulu would want to establish its own TAT, but he urged the Council to carefully consider the state of the economy before proceeding with yet another tax increase.
