  • Lighting the Way to Super-efficiency (Code Green)

The hosts for this episode are Howard Wiig and Howard Wiig.

    LED's, Super-efficiency, Cool Lighting.

New technology is inundating us--witness the iPhone which did not exist 15 years ago and now dominates our lives.   Electric lighting is improving at a mile a minute.  From the incandescent lamp, largely unchanged since Edison, to fluorescent lamps to compact fluorescent lamps and now to LED's, improvements have been rapid and revolutionary.  LED's are now seven times more efficient than incandescents (think 10 mpg vs. 70 mpg.)
Incandescents were hot enough to set fires while LED's are barely warm.  They come in any color and can be used for virtually any application..

  • The Many Facets of Failure in Afghanistan (Figments: On Reality)

The hosts for this episode are Dan 'Fig' Leaf and Dan 'Fig' Leaf.

Failure in Afghanistan Has Many Fathers.

The host, a combat veteran of the conflicts in Serbia and Iraq, examines the many causes of the failure of U.S. and allied efforts in Afghanistan. Fig was in the Pentagon on 9/11/01 and deployed to both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His examination of the tragic outcome we are witnessing as the U.S. withdraws is easily non-political as there is plenty of blame to go around.

He addresses the strategic decisions made at the national level and operational military choices that led to the Taliban retaking Afghanistan. The costs are myriad and immense to the U.S., to military members that served there, and to the Afghan people, and second order consequences are bound to multiply over time..

The host for this episode is Stephanie Dalton.

In this year, the 2020-21 pandemic school year, most students lost the socializing experience of school and academic learning time due to school closings or having most of school online.  Digital learning has advantages, but does it replace rich classroom settings, transactions with peers and teachers over compelling activities?  This show poses the public’s questions often asked about what students have missed and what they greatly need to gain in post-pandemic classrooms in schools reimagined for all to learn..

  • The Reenactments of Myths in American History (History is Here to Help)

The host for this episode is Jay Fidell.  The guests for this episode are Peter Hoffenberg and Jean Rosenfeld.

Peter Hoffenberg and Jean Rosenfeld help us understand The Reenactments of Myths in American History; The Insurrection was Reenactment of a Myth.  We discuss We discuss one particular myth, the Fourth Turning, adhered to by Steve Bannon, ignored by the pundit class even when he brought it up in debate and interviews. and its uncritical acceptance by people who should know better.

Then there is the myth of America's founding, which was expounded by Trump on July 3 and 4 to a national audience.  Then there is the myth of the South and its "lost cause." Myth is made real when followers dedicate themselves to enacting it, and it is not possible to "correct" it by providing mere facts.

This is why January 6 looked like a Reenactment show on steroids. This suggests that without myth, a nation cannot cohere, but when myths duel or change, so do the politics of national identity.

  • The Time Tax (Talking Tax)

Government Takes Your Money and Time Too.

The host for this episode is Jay Fidell.  The guest for this episode is Tom Yamachika.

“The Atlantic” argues persuasively that government not only taxes people by taking their money, but also imposes administrative burdens that waste countless precious hours of people’s time.
American benefit programs are, as a whole, difficult and sometimes impossible for everyday citizens to use. Our red tape entangles millions of people who are struggling to find a job, failing to feed their kids, sliding into poverty, or managing a disabling health condition.
Nationally, the time tax is regressive, falling most heavily on the poor, the less educated, the ethnic minorities.  Agencies implementing the laws want to weed out the fraudsters and the liars, and those otherwise unworthy.  As a result, claimants, if they find out about the benefit at all, face an uphill battle between navigating through complex qualification requirements and dealing with an agency that is more focused on having a claimant run the gauntlet than in cooperating to get that claimant the benefits allowed by law..
