Toronto singer-songwriter STACEY is one busy woman. When she's not hosting women-fronted music showcases and workshops for her organization, Toronto Women in Music, she's actively songwriting and performing at venues across the city.
So it only made sense that she would quit her day job as a UX designer to do music full-time.
Her recently released sophomore EP, First Move, is a considerable departure from her previous stripped-down piano songs.
The EP delivers a handful of lush, etheral bedroom indie-pop songs that capture the excitement of romantic bliss.
Picture Lana Del Rey meets Washed Out, with a bit of Tame Impala thrown in for good measure.
Now with a temporary move to Los Angeles on the horizon, STACEY is hoping to make the "first move" in taking her career to an international level.
This week our guest is Lauren Pirie, a freelance illustrator and artist who explores feminism and fantasy through intricate ink drawings.
According to Pirie, "growth is sometimes about submerging yourself in darkness in order to let go." Loyal to both the natural and the supernatural, Pirie's work explores the embrace of anger and disenchantment, seduced by a sense of place that exists outside of a defined space and time, but often in the realm of women.
Pirie's drawings have appeared in magazines, children's books, public murals and film, including This.Broken.Mixtape's own Our Liner Notes book and documentary short.
In addition to her rich body of illustration work, Pirie is the co-founder of the grassroots arts and environmental organization, The About Face Collective.
