This Day Devo

The world is selling us cheap imitations, but God's Gifts are GOOD and PERFECT.  Your salvation is his greatest joy.

"Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created."  - James 1:16–18

Are you setting your own sin trap?

"When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." - Jas 1:13–15.

I ran a marathon!  Well, I survived bonking out in a marathon.  Focus on the finish line through trials and temptations. "God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." - James 1:12

The reality of the brevity of our lives can be shattering because we spend so much time building our own kingdoms.  God humbles both the rich and poor, and a believer is to boast only in Christ.

I grew up a Pittsburgh Steelers fan during the Hines Ward era. Beyond his team leading statistics, Hines was famous for his smile. He had a huge grin the entire game and it seemed like he smiled bigger after being hit the hardest. When trouble finds us in the is life, we have an opportunity for great joy in our steadfastness.

To begin our study of the book of James, let's read the introduction written by Eugene Peterson in The Message Bible. James is the half brother of Jesus who was martyred for his faith and introduced himself as a slave to God and the Lord Jesus Christ in James 1:1.
