It was just 174 years ago today, September 12, 1847, when a massive and devastating artillery barrage destroyed the fortress and Military Academy of Chapultepec. The Academy was situated on a 200-foot hill southwest of Mexico City. The fortress was in name only, and though Santa Anna’s forces far outnumbers General Scotts forces, 15,000 to roughly 7,000, the Mexican forces were spread thin and seriously demoralized, many even running away during the artillery barrage.
