On October 14, just before its first landfall on the Carolinas, Hazel’s wind speeds rocketed to 240 kilometres per hour (150 mph), and THAT qualified it to be upgraded to a Category 4 storm. By the time it reached Canada, it was an extratropical category 1. Malton Airport (now Lester B. Pearson International Airport), in the west end of the city reported 137 mm (5.4 in) of rain, with the totals increasing until past Brampton which had been in the crosshairs of over 200mm!
