  • The Six Basic Human Needs - Contribution - with Hina Solanki

In the seventh and final part of their ongoing collaborative mini-series, Hina Solanki and Paul Lowe explore the six basic human needs, focussing on each in turn, in an attempt to better understand what motivates us as human beings.

This week, Hina and Paul explore the need for contribution, the act of giving back to humanity, and perhaps the culmination of all other human needs.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Contribution can take many forms and doesn't necessarily mean a physical exchange. It can be given in the shape of knowledge, wisdom, guidance or spirituality.
    • Development leads to attainment. Attainment grants us new attributes. It is part of life to give back these newly acquired attributes. If we gain wisdom, we should share it.
    • We must take care of ourselves in order to contribute effectively. Make sure that you are in a place of giving and generosity and then do all you can to give back.
    • Walk through life unafraid of other opinions. Be brave enough to present the real you to the world, and shrug away the feelings of insecurity we feel. The world must accept us on our own terms.

    BEST MOMENTS

    'Giving doesn't mean it's a physical thing'

'The more you give the more you get'

'By giving to others, we're actually giving to ourselves'

'I am the sky - the clouds come and go'

    ABOUT THE HOST

One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!”

Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity.

Through this Mastering The Game Of Life podcast, and books he has been involved in – including being a best-selling co-author – Paul also helps others to get their own inspirational messages and stories out into the world; as well as offering support to many charitable organisations, in their development & fund-raising.

  • Body And Mind: Separate Or Entwined? - Paul D. Lowe & Steve Treanor

In this episode, Paul talks to physiologist and fitness expert, Steve Treanor, about the fascinating question of the symbiosis between our minds and bodies. Exactly how separate are they, and is there anything we can do create a better sense of harmony between mind and body?

Steve and Paul hold an illuminating conversation about how separate, or entwined, these two entities truly are...

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Our brains still work the same way as they did in ancient times, but our bodies have been forced to adapt and survive in different ways. This has created something of an anomaly.
    • The reason that people find it hard to diet and exercise, is because we are not naturally designed to do this. We have come to desire it over thousands of years, but in ancient times, these factors were natural byproducts of our lifestyles.
    • Society has come with its own set of expectations. As a result, we endeavour to look a certain way and perform a certain way. This is the concept of social fitness.
    • We must always seek to improve our mental health as well as our physical health. This requires embracing our spiritual side and growing in a more holistic way.

    BEST MOMENTS

'Straight away there's a bit of an anomaly between the brain and the body'

'Over a period of time the body chances and adapts to the loads you put on it'

'If it was that easy we would all be world-class athletes'

'We don't just have physical fitness - we have social fitness'

  • The Six Basic Human Needs - Growth - with Hina Solanki

In the sixth part of their ongoing collaborative mini-series, Hina Solanki and Paul Lowe explore the six basic human needs, focussing on each in turn, in an attempt to better understand what motivates us as human beings.

This week, Hina and Paul explore the need for growth, and the need we all have to develop and evolve.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We can never know everything. Life is the pursuit of betterment and evolution. We should always strive for constant development, and we have infinite ways of doing so.
    • More than any other need, we must have established needs in place before we effectively escalate towards evolution and growth.
    • Growth can often be fuelled by a need for significance. The need for recognition in some way can spur us on to betterment, thereby providing growth and development.
    • Put a plan in place, and you can achieve any level of growth. It requires willpower and determination and planning, but ultimately we are only constrained by own fear.

    BEST MOMENTS

'You can't get to growth without finding that balance'

'That's the voice of wisdom speaking there...'

'I needed to be significant. The effect was growth'

'You need to believe that it is achievable'

  • The Six Basic Human Needs: Love And Connection - Paul D. Lowe & Hina Solanki

In the fifth part of their ongoing collaborative mini-series, Hina Solanki and Paul Lowe explore the six basic human needs, focussing on each in turn, in an attempt to better understand what motivates us as human beings.

This week, Hina and Paul explore the need for love and connection, a sense of acceptance, belonging and support.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Many mistake connection for love, but the feelings are strikingly different. Connection is the initial feeling of oneness we feel when our values and ideals connect with another's.
    • Every moment of connection is a choice. We can choose to make each point of impact a positive one. Each connection has the power to make the world better if we try.
    • When we feel more connected to the world around us, we feel a greater sense of love. This in turn leads to happiness and contentment. Connection is the starting point for happiness.
    • Life is a voyage of self-discovery. It is about finding out who we really are. Each connection causes this journey to variate in countless, beautiful ways. Each connection is invaluable to creating our own story.

    BEST MOMENTS

    'Love conquers all'

'That, for me, is the diversity of connection'

'We create our own bespoke version of what that love is'

'That beautiful flower grew out of very dark soil'

  • The Six Basic Human Needs: Significance - Paul D. Lowe & Hina Solanki

In the fourth part of their ongoing collaborative mini-series, Hina Solanki and Paul Lowe explore the six basic human needs, focussing on each in turn, in an attempt to better understand what motivates us as human beings.

This week, Hina and Paul explore the need for significance, otherwise known as the need to be recognised, and how it shapes our actions, our deeds, and our emotions.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Everyone is different, and therefore everyone wants to feel special in different ways. This makes the quest for significance impossible to standardise or quantify.
    • Every challenge in life is put before us in order to shape us into the unique being we grow into. There are no failures, only lessons.
    • When we perform deeds from the heart, and for the love of doing it, we achieve significance. We are the sum total of the deeds we perform.
    • Sometimes the need for significance can manifest itself in more primal emotional outbursts. Even the rawest of emotions is our way of subconsciously asking for help.

    BEST MOMENTS

'Significance really is the quality of being worthy and special'

'Whatever we've gone through has made us what we are today'

'I am somebody and I have a part to play in this world'

'Love changes everything - how we live and how we die...'

  • The Six Basic Human Needs: Uncertainty - Paul D. Lowe & Hina Solanki

In the third part of their ongoing collaborative mini-series, Hina Solanki and Paul Lowe explore the six basic human needs, focussing on each in turn, in an attempt to better understand what motivates us as human beings.

This week, Hina and Paul explore the need for uncertainty (or variety), that special sense of craving and needing unexpected excitement or disruption in our lives.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Our six needs shape us in terms of personality, our growth, our contribution. They give shape to our spiritual needs, and through the six main variables, provide us with our own unique humanity.
    • Human beings crave variety. It helps us to remain excited about life and provides us with a challenge from time to time.
    • Uncertainty and certainty work hand in hand. We need a solid foundation upon which to base our life, but from that, we can operate a step into the unknown.
    • Seeking certainty through uncertainty is the art of mastering not just the game of life, but also the language we use in self-talk. It is the language of love, and applies to every part of our lives.

    BEST MOMENTS

'That's the beauty of human life as we know it'

'If we don't have certainty or uncertainty, it causes an imbalance'

'We are spiritual beings having human experiences and challenges'

'To use the language of love is what it's all about'

  • The Six Human Needs: Certainty - Paul D. Lowe & Hina Solanki

In the second part of their ongoing collaborative mini-series, Hina Solanki and Paul Lowe explore the six basic human needs, focussing on each in turn, in an attempt to better understand what motivates us as human beings.

This week, Hina and Paul explore the need for certainty, what it means to each of us, and why it's critical to our ability to create pleasure for others.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Certainty manifests itself as a need for security, safety and assurance. It is our need to feel in control, to know what's coming next. It serves our need for predictability.
    • By feeling secure and safe in ourselves, we allow ourselves the ability to create that sense of happiness and safety in others. Therefore, by establishing our own certainty, we generate certainty for the world around us.
    • We are the constant creators of our own story. We filter and discard the things that are unpleasant to look at, and build our narratives from the positive elements of our lives.
    • We must let go of the past if we are to embrace our futures. By holding on to the past, and to the regrets we harbour because of that past, we open ourselves up to fear.

    BEST MOMENTS

'It's such a critical area in all our lives, even if we're not aware of it'

'The higher the need for certainty, the less risk we're willing to take'

'All beliefs are false. It's something we as individuals have decided is true'

'Things in life take you off course sometimes, that's completely normal. You need to re-ground yourself'

  • If I Ruled The World: Contribution Would Be Key - Paul D. Lowe & Hina Solanki

As part of his ongoing discussion surrounding the fascinating prospects of how the world would look in alternative circumstances, Paul talks to coach, philosopher and mentor, Hina Solanki, who explains how she would change the world if given the chance to do so.

As Hina discusses, contribution must be at the heart of every human endeavour if we hope to create a world in which we may all stand up and be counted.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Contribution is about ‘giving back’. Doing as much as you can for each other, at work, in the community and just in life in general.
    • Is more important to do lots of small things and have impact widely or should you go ‘all in’ on one thing in particular, many do the latter because it is what ‘looks good’.
    • Many believe giving is inherently selfish, we do it because of what it means to us individually, not actually the people we are helping.
    • The essence of contribution is contributing to ourselves so that we then have something significant to give to others and the world.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Born into an Indian family, Hina came to the UK with her family at just 6 months old. Her parents were practising Hindus, and she grew up in a serene, philosophical household, laying the foundations for her spiritual, holistic philosophy and approach to life. Hina’s father was a businessman, ably and enthusiastically supported by her mother, and she has inherited her parents’ business acumen every bit as much as their spiritual focus.

  • The Six Human Needs: An Introduction - Paul D. Lowe & Hina Solanki

Everything we do in life is done in order to fulfil a need. If we strip back these needs and requirements, we can clearly identify that all human needs centre around six very primal, very established necessities.

In today's show, the first in a series of specialised conversations about this fascinating subject, Paul talks to coach, mentor, entrepreneur and fellow traveller upon life's highway, Hina Solanki, the host of the Feel Fabulous podcast, about the six basic human needs - how to identify them, and how to make sure that each need is being effectively served.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The six human needs are a need for certainty, a need for uncertainty (variety), for significance, for love and connection, for growth, and finally the need for contribution.
    • The need for certainty, or uncertainty, can manifest itself in many different ways. The most common form of endorsement comes in the structuring of routines in our lives. These routines often then lead to a desire for disruption or uncertainty.
    • Validation in business and life come in the form of congratulations or merit. We seek these awards in order to feel that sense of achievement that convinces us that we are on the right track. It also serves to feed our competitive nature.
    • Many people settle for connection rather than love, for fear of being hurt if they lower their defences. But the pain we feel in the fallout from love's sting is a price worth paying. Love is always the greatest gift we can hope for.

    BEST MOMENTS

'I created an almost military-like way of living'

'I've lived within that goldfish bowl - that prison - for so many years'

'Everybody is unique. We are all important. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses'

'To love somebody, we need to learn to love ourselves'

  • Confidence + Persistence = Success - Paul D. Lowe & Donald L. Ferguson

Anything is possible if we work hard enough, and most importantly, try hard enough. That's the message from this week's guest, Donald L Ferguson, who joins Paul to discuss the formula behind success - Confidence + Persistence = Success - and how it has led to huge success in his own life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • To gain confidence, you have to have knowledge. Knowledge means you have to have experience. To become confident in our abilities, we have to act and you have to learn.
    • If we apply the knowledge we have, with the confidence we develop, to the persistence we must find within ourselves, we become more and more successful.
    • A crucial part of setting any kind of goal or objective, is having the imagination and vision to visualize our own finishing line. We must know where we're headed before we begin the race.
    • Any idea, service, thought or ambition can be worth sharing with the world. But it may not find its ideal audience straight away. We must persist until this creation finds its perfect partner.

    BEST MOMENTS

'Imagination is more important than knowledge'

'I had my imagination and vision of what I could see. I literally visualized'

'You have to act so that the manifestation occurs'

'If you lose sight of your end goal, then others will knock you off your course'
