The Just Koz Show

This is How you Handle a Highly Emotional Situation

Listen Later

Have you ever listened to someone and as they are talking you realize they are crazy but you still try to understand.  Then it turns around and you feel crazy about it?  You waste a lot of energy and worry and try to figure out what they meant what they said and so on.  This is called "Don't try to make sense of nonsense." This was inspired by a seminar that Koz gave about a specific mental health disorder called "Borderline Personality Disorder."  It's basically Bipolar disorder on steroids.  Most people know what bipolar is and even use it as a joke.  But it is a very serious mental health issue.  They usually have lots of talents and great things about them but they have a hard time with deep relationship issues because of the fear of being abandoned.

Think for one moment about any sort of relationship in your life.  Then a person behaves in a way that doesn't make sense to you. But you don't want to fight with this person.  When someone is not making sense with their behavior, take a moment and say to yourself "I need to stop trying to make sense of this nonsense." When you say that to yourself, it allows you to back up and have realistic expectations of yourself and the person.  If the person is highly emotional (which is usually the case).  If you are trying to make sense of their emotions, they likely won't have the same emotions the next day, or even 15 minutes from now.  You can get trapped in an argument with someone.  If you just gave it more time, then the person will have cooled down their emotions.  Now you don't need to use all of your energy on nonsense.

The Just Koz Show is hosted by David "Koz" Kozlowski, a former football player at the University of Utah. Now he talks to athletes, artists, and other community members about important mental health and social issues. You can find Koz on facebook at facebook.com/TheJustKozShow.
