Approximately 1,000 Skidmore students participate in civic engagement projects, clubs, or programs each year. Whether it’s serving grilled cheese sandwiches for world hunger, or taking time out of their busy schedules to mentor or volunteer for dozens of local and national nonprofit organizations–our students inspire a culture of giving back at Skidmore. Hear the many ways Skidmore students make a difference in our conversation with Michelle Hubbs, director of community service.

As an annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports day, members of Women's athletic teams at Skidmore help run a clinic for young girls in the Saratoga community in order to participate in sports they love, and even some they have never heard of. For the first time, Skidmore Women's teams are partnering with the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York for the event. Allison Marinucci, young women's leadership initiative program manager for the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York joins Women's soccer player Julia Leslie '18 and Women's head soccer coach Lacey Largeteau in anticipation of the exciting day.

“The Quest,” taught by Erica Bastress-Dukehart, associate professor of history, puts her students at the wheel to learn more about medieval and early modern Europe through developing personas, fulfilling tasks, and of course a final quest. “We start the process the semester before,” Bastress-Dukehart said, “and we talk about what the narrative arc of the course is going to be and what kinds of readings we want to do.” For their class, Jess Shapiro ’18, Juliette Rosenthal ’17 and Meaghan McDonald ’18 were transported to the year 1453.

For the last 17 years, professor Gordon Thompson has taught courses and led seminars on The Beatles that have had students analyzing music, comparing biographical accounts, and placing the band in the historical-cultural context of the 1960s. In connection with these courses, he and his students have developed “Beatlemore Skidmania,” an annual concert featuring an assortment of campus musicians  that began as an informal, end-of-semester musical celebration. Professor Thompson sits down with Beatlemore 2017 producer Will Scott '18 to talk about Thompson's final performance. Had to miss Beatlemore 2017? The first semester of college for first-year students can bring some nerves: new people, a different class schedule, and a new location. Every year, a group of students choose to take on an entirely new adventure before they begin at Skidmore and join the First-Year London experience. While in London, Carolyn Fahrner '21 and Raymi Ramirez '21 explain what it's like to head to London instead of Skidmore, and what they're most looking forward to when they return for Spring semester.

The Skidmore-Saratoga Consulting Partnership (SSCP) builds strategic connections between campus and the community by offering pro bono consulting services lead entirely by Skidmore students. Professor Colleen Burke, Caitlyn Opfer ’18, and Jack Sloan ’18 discuss the unique and valuable experiences in the course as well as past projects.
