There’s something powerful about what happened in the garden of Gethsemane. It seems to be late in the evening, and Jesus knew what was coming—suffering, betrayal and the cross. He walked a little farther into the garden, fell on His face, and prayed, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

In that moment, we see Jesus fully engaged in His humanity.
He felt the weight and the pain of what was ahead. He wasn’t rushing toward the cross. He was honest. He didn’t want to suffer. He asked the Father if there was another way.

We all have those moments that we replay in our minds like old movie reels. Perhaps wishing you could go back and do things differently. A conversation you could have handled with more grace, or path you would avoid if we had only known where it led.

But here’s the honest truth: even if we could go back and do some things over, we’d likely just make different mistakes. Different choices might lead us to different people or places, but they wouldn’t make us perfect. We would likely just trade one set of regrets for another.

Life has a way of pressing in on us. Sometimes, it presses gently in the form of daily stress or an uncertain outcome, Perhaps it’s a prayer that hasn’t yet been answered. But other times, it presses so hard we feel like we can’t breathe.
The truth is that pain comes in all shapes and sizes. For someone today, it’s a health crisis. For another, it might be a broken relationship or a loss that leaves an aching emptiness. And then there’s the hidden kind, the internal battles, that bring a sense of being unseen or misunderstood or alone.

And yet, tucked into Romans 8:18 is a perspective that lifts our eyes from the heaviness of “now” and turns them toward the promise of “not yet.”

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
