Because the Internet makes information readily available, I often take different classes online. Right now I’m doing a study on astronomy, looking at the stars and the planets, their movement, and how they hang there in outer space.
That’s what I’m learning. But, what are you studying? Jesus asks the same question, “What are you studying?” And one of the things that he wants us to consider is our culture. Jesus wants us to know our culture, not just so that we can know who’s on the Grammy awards, who’s on the radio, and all the movie stars. He’s not concerned that we know the latest trends and what styles to wear. Jesus wants us to know culture so that we will know how to relate to those around us so that we will know how to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ in culturally relevant ways.
I remember someone telling me they didn’t want our church to be culturally relevant. I thought, well should we be culturally irrelevant? Many churches are doing an excellent job at that.
At Tab Church, we want to be culturally relevant. The Gospel of Jesus Christ never changes. It’s always relevant. The hope found in Him, the peace found in Him and his kingdom - that’s for all generations at all times. But, the way we present that hope, the way we present that message, that changes from generation to generation.
