In 1990 the Gainesville Ripper terrified a small college town with a spree killing that brutally ended the lives of five students. A connection was made between the Gainesville murdersand the horrific killing of a family in Shreveport a year earlier. When a call came into Crime Stoppers, it sent the investigation in the direction of Danny Rolling.
Meanwhile Kevin Williamson, an unknown screenwriter, was inspired by the case to write a film about a killer who terrorized college kids. That film became Scream and revitalized the slasher horror film genre, spurring a new generation of fans.
In today’s episode I discuss the horrific crimes of Danny Rolling, its connection to Scream, and how the film became an inspiration for copycat killings.

As a child growing up in San Francisco, David Fincher rode to school in a police escorted bus because of a series of local killings perpetrated by someone claiming to be the Zodiac. Between December 1968 and October 1969, the Bay area was gripped with fear of the killings, that took the lives of five people. Even with two survivors of the attacks, no suspect was identified.
In 2007, Fincher released his film titled Zodiac which covers not just the killings, but also the subsequent letters and ciphers sent to numerous San Francisco newspapers starting in July 1969. Over the next five years, at least 14 more letters were sent. The hunt for the person responsible became an obsession that still haunts many to this day.
In today’s episode, we discuss Zodiac and how much of Fincher’s version of these real killings might be true.

On a rainy February day in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers came across a pregnant Indigenous woman without any shoes in flight from her abusive partner. While many others passed her by, Elle-Máijá stopped and tried to encourage the woman to seek help.
Elle-Máijá dwelled on the experience for years, and was eventually driven to adapt it to film in 2019. The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open, which she co-directed alongside Kathleen Hepburn, tells the story of this chance encounter between two Indigenous women.
In today’s episode we separate fact from film fiction, and explore what might be true about The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open.
