Stollery story:
• Elias was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and required his first open heart surgery at 6 days old and he had his second open heart at three months old.
• He was scheduled for his third “easy” open heart in March 2016, and experienced a massive stroke while in surgery.
• As a result, he required emergency surgery to relieve the pressure and save his life. He spent three months in the Stollery and had multiple other surgeries, and he slowly began to relearn how to swallow, speak and walk.
• As a result of his stroke, he developed cerebral palsy and vision deficits. He is followed closely by specialists in neurosurgery, neurology, ophthalmology, pulmonary hypertension and cardiology at the Stollery, and at the ICAN centre, outpatient physio and occupational therapy and spasticity clinics at the Glenrose.
• He experiences stiffness and undergoes Botox treatments several times a year for relief, and is awaiting surgery on his legs again. This will be sedation #79 in his ten years of life.
• He collects character bandaids each year for his birthday to donate to the Stollery, for his “Owie project”, a way he can give back to the facility that has supported him and our entire family all of these years. This year his goal was 1,000 boxes and he will far surpass that!
Elias played Tiny Tim in the Citadel’s production of a Christmas Carol last winter.
