This month, UNC epidemiologist Nabarun Dasgupta was named as a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Grant, an $800,000 award in recognition of his lifesaving work to help fight the opioid epidemic. Dasgupta’s Opioid Data Lab tries to determine the actual contents of drugs found on the street, to help individuals made smarter choices and to help first responders and therapists provide better care. He’s also spent years working to prevent overdose deaths by providing naloxone to communities around the U.S.

Aaron welcomes Dasgupta to the studio to discuss his work – and his reflections on winning the MacArthur grant. (He’s only the third MacArthur winner ever in UNC’s history.)

It’s time for another round of Studio Sessions with the School of Rock Chapel Hill, featuring three classic songs performed by the House Band!

This month, Aaron welcomes six members of the House Band: Joshua Bosworth, Lachlan McElwee, Kate Stokes, Jack Wilson, Katie Wilson, and (for the first time) Liam Chaires. (Liam’s playing saxophone – also a first for Studio Sessions!)

With Halloween just around the corner, the band members discuss their favorite seasonal songs. School of Rock owner/GM David Joseph is also on hand to plug upcoming events – including an all-day mid-season show and Halloween Spooktacular at Cats Cradle Back Room on Sunday, October 26.

What’s the state of the program right now, and how much time should UNC give Bill Belichick to turn things around? Aaron chats with sports expert David Glenn, who says Carolina’s next few games are going to be pivotal. (As for that second question, Glenn says two years is about right – partly because it’ll be clear at that point whether Belichick’s process is showing results, and partly because a contract buyout will cost UNC a lot less after two years than after one.)
