Head online and check out a new interactive timeline that focuses on Orange County’s indigenous and enslaved communities in the decades before the Civil War. It’s called “Common Ground in Orange County,” the joint project of local nonprofit Indigenous Memories and Charlotte-based organization Parklife – funded by a grant from America 250 NC, which is organizing events statewide to spotlight America’s history on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Saturday, September 6, head to Hillsborough for an all-day historical event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Third Provincial Congress, which met in Hillsborough in 1775 as part of the run-up to the American Revolution. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free events all over downtown – including academic speakers, a colonial market, Revolutionary-era reenactments, children’s activities, and more.

This week, Scott and Aaron remember pivotal moments in American social movements, from the ratification of the 19th Amendment (guaranteeing the right to vote for women) to Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963 – and a lesser-known but major figure in the women’s rights movement in the early 20th century. They’re all examples of a key fact about many social movements: they may culminate with rapid gains, but it often takes decades of hard work and dedicated activism, on the local and state level as well as the national level, in order to enable those big achievements in the end. (Also this week: the birthday of famed author Mary Shelley, whose “Frankenstein” grew out of one extremely cold summer.)

Aaron welcomes Joe Welsh, a local resident who’s working with a pair of acclaimed game designers to develop a new family board game called “Making Monsters.” The game is set to launch in the coming weeks and it’s getting rave reviews, but the story doesn’t stop there: Welsh worked on the game while simultaneously fighting a rare and life-threatening form of cancer, and he’s also using the opportunity to send messages of hope and support to fellow travelers on the cancer journey – and to push for greater awareness and more funding for cancer research and treatment.
