Publisher's Summary:
What confronts them now threatens to uproot a lifetime of deeply buried secrets: the impending marriage of Rose's capable and caring son to Rachel's emotionally troubled daughter. Once again, the two women and their families are pitted against each other...just as Rachel learns that her mother, Sylvie, is dying.
Only Rose knows that Sylvie is in reality her mother - and yearns to be recognized as Sylvie's own before it is too late. Sylvie must choose between the intricate web of lies behind which she shields her loved ones...and a truth that will shatter the lives of both her daughters - as well as that of her fragile granddaughter - before it can begin to heal them.
Members Reviews:
not quite as gripping as the first, but still a worthy follow-up to my favorite novel
I knew there was no way a sequel could enamor me as wholly as the original book, Garden of Lies, but I was willing to give Thorns of Truth a chance. I wasn't disappointed. Rachel and Rose are still the same characters they were in the first book, but older and more concentrated versions of themselves. Rachel is still stubborn, single-minded, hard-working and infuriatingly selfish. Rose is still heartbroken, sharp, self-pitying and a little too good at wearing her heart on her sleeve. They are equally well-rounded characters with realistic flaws and strengths, but I've always been partial to Rose.
There's too much going on for me to summarize, but I'll do my best: Rachel and Rose have two grown children who are now dating each other. Rachel's adopted daughter is unbalanced and suicidal, while Rose's son is overly caring and afraid to leave the relationship. Rachel and Brian are still married, but unhappily. Rose and Max were married for 20-something years before he passed away of an unexpected heart attack. Rose's biological and Rachel's "adopted" mother, Sylvie, struggles with whether or not she should tell the truth about her connection to Rose and how she came to end up with Rachel as her daughter. The story centers around Sylvie's inner conflict, the drama between Rose and Rachel's kids and how it affects the families, Rose navigating her first relationship with a new man after Max's death, and Rachel trying to figure out what went wrong in her marriage to Brian.
This book is a fitting continuation of the story involving the characters we grew to love in the first book. I was very satisfied with the ending and wouldn't mind reading a third novel in the series.
Felt like I was part of the story
I loved it, loved it & loved it even more! I first read the Diary, which MADE me need to read Garden of Lies (5++++) and I was NOT disappointed in anyway with Thorns of Truth. The plot & characters are a part of you when reading. I HATED FOR THIS TO END... now what????
SEQUEL IS HELPFUL AFTER READING THE FIRST GARDEN OF LIES READ IN THAT ORDER
THIS SEQUEL TIED UP ALL LOOSE ENDS. I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH A GOOD READ
I liked it
My growing up family had 4 kids. 3 boys and me. My husband and I had 5 kids. Now I have 13 grands and 5 greats. Therefore I am used to complicated family dynamics. I loved the way Eileen built on a very complicated start and over 2 books showed how the complications worked out.
