Today’s Scripture Promise:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Today’s Observation:
The Lord prophesied through His servant Jeremiah regarding the end of the Babylonian captivity. This captivity occurred because God’s people decided that they did not want to be ruled by Him. They did not adhere to His laws or judgments. They did not listen to the prophets; therefore, God used heathens to get their attention. Near the end of the captivity, Daniel prayed this prayer. “We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.” (Daniel 9:5-7). You get a sense of Daniel’s agony and desperation over the way the people treated God.
The Lord gave Jeremiah a message of hope that all of Israel would look forward to after seventy long years. They must have longed for deliverance much like their foreparents longed for the exodus. “For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.” (Jeremiah 29:10-14).
This world is like Babylon and Egypt of old. I often feel as if I am a captive here. When will the turmoil end? What hope do we have? Many countries around the world are in constant privation, war, terror, and are faced with plagues. How can they be hopeful? As we diligently seek the Lord and give ourselves to Him, we become His children. As to the Jews of old, He promises that we will have an expected end. We will have a hopeful future. One day soon all evil will cease and peace will be restored to the universe. Let us turn to God with all of our hearts, and we will be delivered. We will finally experience in the fullest sense our hopeful future. “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:9-10). “And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away...
