Scott is not what you would call a real connoisseur of blogs. So he starts firing questions at the other two theologizing guys about why they blog.

He begins by asking the guys questions that could deflate their enthusiasm a bit. Did they know they are just doing the zine-ing of a former generation? With so many blogs (he gives statistics!), why add to the number? Just what are they trying to accomplish anyway?

But Kyle and Barry parry with him a bit. They remind their friendly parishioner that before zine-ing there were tract wars. The prof and pastor talk about the ability that blogging gives to get the Word of God out, and to sharpen theirs and others’ thinking. They admit there are failings and dangers in blogging, but there are also principles to follow and blessings that come from it.

Scott puts on his parishioner hat and starts asking the pastors about preaching. He soon finds out afterward that he can hardly get a word in edgewise!

After exploring what Kyle and Barry do when it comes to choosing topics for sermons preached on occasion at other churches, Scott catechizes them about catechetical preaching. What defines it? Is there a better name for it? What’s its history? How is it different than expositional preaching? Are there right and wrong ways of doing it? How would one go about seeing it implemented in a congregation?

A listener submitted a question regarding the nature of the heavenly rewards that the Bible promises. What are they, and how will they be enjoyed?

After first clarifying whether Kyle uses the term “y’all” or not in Kansas, the 3GTers get down to business. They commend the question, as too few believers even consider how their daily actions will impact their eternal existence. Scriptures are referenced where the rewards are mentioned. The Gordian knot of how works are worthless with respect to justification yet required in the life of believers is untangled. Whether heavenly rewards are proper motivation for Christian obedience is debated a bit. The crowns the Bible promises are explained. The guys discuss rewards that all believers receive versus special honors bestowed on those who suffer or show faithfulness.

After a brief hiatus, the boys are back ready to rumble. And for this episode, they have added a fourth guy to help them do so.

Dr. Richard Gamble is Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, author of The Whole Counsel of God, and (importantly for this episode) a black belt in karate. He joins the 3GTers to answer a question from a listener. What is two kingdom (2K) theology, and how does it relate to the theological perspective of Christ’s mediatorial kingdom (CMK)?

Dr. Gamble warms up by tracing the teaching of the two kingdoms from Augustine to Luther. He then strikes by showing some key distinctions between classical and modern 2K theology. From there, Rick defends the mediatorial kingship of Christ, and then counters 2K with explaining how CMK is a better expression of the Westminster standards and the Scriptures themselves. The episode concludes with the practical outworking of each of these theological perspectives, with CMK’s hand clearly lifted as the winner.

On May 10th, Geneva College will host a dedication event in honor of John Gerstner, as the theological library and papers of this prominent theologian and prolific author are donated by his family to the college. In anticipation of this time, 3GT invited his biographer, Jeffrey McDonald, on the program to interview him about Gerstner.

Dr. McDonald wrote the work John Gerstner and the Renewal of Presbyterian and Reformed Evangelicalism in Modern America. As the guys interview Dr McDonald, we learn of such things as his conversion; the influences that shaped Gerstner’s theology; his ecclesiastical journey and battles; the seminaries, ministries, and movements he influenced; his relationship with men such as R.C. Sproul; and of course his books.
