  • Episode 282: Presbyterian Shepherding

Well, the boys are back together again! With all three of them on their mics, they jest about the worst episode ever, their Argentinian listeners (or lack thereof), and Barry’s ability (?) to sing 70’s pop songs. But eventually they get down to business. For in this episode they discuss how Presbyterianism helps in the work of shepherding.

As Presbyterians, the guys believe that this form of church government helps in the work of caring for the flock of God. They talk about the importance of of the church being able to select their own pastors and elders as shepherds in the Presbyterian system. Then they discuss how feeding the flock God’s Word is such an important part of the work, and how the accountability for teaching in the Presbyterian church is to be maintained. They then get into other Presbyterian distinctives, such as the plurality, parity, and connectivity of elders and how this affects the shepherding ministry. Throughout the episode, they also acknowledge that no system is perfect or better than the character of the men in leadership.

Join the 3GTers for a lively discussion on this topic as you tune into this episode!

  • Episode 281: Church Budgets?

Well, the last time it was only Kyle and Scott recording, one listener said on social media that it was the “worst episode ever.”  So, with these two again back at their mics, they decide to treat a topic guaranteed to get better ratings. Church budgets!

As congregations hold their annual meetings this time of year, often budget discussions can get the most attention. For all types of problems can arise when it comes to the budget: short falls, excesses, pastoral compensation, dishonesty, large expenditures, and the like. So the guys think through biblical examples where the church’s resources were at the fore. They share principles that should govern considerations of both giving and spending in the church. And of course they do it all with their typical back-and-forth Borg-Hunt banter!

With a topic this dry, could this episode be the worst of the worst? Only one way to find out! Tune into this newest episode of 3GT!

  • Episode 280: Law School

With Kyle away on an United Nations–like trip, it’s up to Barry and Scott to hold down the home fort. So after hearing about Scott’s journey in becoming a lawyer and why he enjoys practicing law, the guys turn to a discussion of Christian misunderstandings of the Law of God.

They do so by looking at three texts of Scripture found in the New Testament about God’s Law that are often confusing. Many think these texts set the law of the Old Testament over against the grace that is found in the New Testament. These texts are John 1:17, Romans 6:14–15, and 2 Corinthians 3:6–8. The guys have a lively discussion about this topic based on these texts.

So if you want a bit of clarity on the Scriptures and God’s law, meditate with the guys on His Law on this episode of Three Guys Theologizing (3GT)!

  • Episode 279: The Pulpit & Politics

In this episode of Three Guys Theologizing, they decide to mix the unmixable. For they have a lively discussion about religion and politics. More specifically, about how politics should be treated from the pulpit.

After repeating Timothy’s charge to Timothy not to engage in endless controversies and speculations, the pastor tosses out a number of questions regarding the matter of addressing politics in the pulpit which leads to a wide-ranging conversation. How the pulpit is for proclaiming the kingdom of God and not the kingdoms of men. How politicians should not be allowed behind the pulpit. How preachers should avoid strongly identifying with political parties and candidates. How everything is politicized these days but the pulpit should not be. How wisdom must be used in addressing the important societal issues of our day. How preachers should avoid becoming the Bunyan-esque character Mr. Querulous.

The guys invite you to mix it up with them by tuning into this episode of 3GT!

  • Episode 278: What is Love?

On this episode of 3GT,the parishioner and the prof conduct a book review. They are joined by none other then Kyle Borg, author of a new book entitled What is Love? That’s right – they are interviewing 3GT‘s own resident loveologist!

They begin by having Kyle explain, as president of the Education and Publication Board of the RPCNA, where the idea for Grassmarket Press (the imprint for the series of books What is Love? is a part of) came from. From there, they question greatly why he of all people was chosen to address this subject. After defending himself, Kyle then goes on to explain the theological basis for treating the subject of God’s love and the application of this doctrine tothe Christian life. Incredibly, Scott seems to be greatly impacted by this book as he passes down numerous opportunities to get back at Kyle and praises his writing instead!

It’s another informative and entertaining time with the guys! And you could possibly win a free book if you listen! So tune into this episode of 3GT!

  • Episode 277: From Generation to Generation

All three guys are together again so this episode starts off a bit rambunctious. The parishioner (or is it placeholder?) is teased for wearing a cardigan while exercising. The pastor is dubbed the “loveologist.” But then they settle down and get to business. For they address the subject of passing the Christian faith down to the coming generations.

The 3GTers begin by addressing the promise of Pentecost found in Acts 2:39, “For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” They then look at the Old Testament background of the promises God gives to the spiritual descendants of Abraham, whose child each Christian becomes through faith in Jesus Christ (Gal. 3:7-9, 29). The guys look at how the Old Testament foresaw the age of the Gentiles and how these promises that the descendants of believers would be blessed in the New Covenant age. Having established the promises, they go on to discuss how to exercise the means the Lord has given to claim these promises. All along the way, they continue to emphasize that these promises are only effectual by the sovereign grace and power of the Lord.

Believers have an incredible privilege and duty to hand the faith down to the coming generations. So join us on this episode of Three Guys Theologizing and, in the words of John Owen, become “acquainted with the promises” the Lord has given to His church!

  • Episode 276: Pontificating on Trueman

Though the prof was kept away from recording by a snowstorm, this episode brings rejoicing for the wandering parishioner has returned! Yes, Kyle is joined by Scott in this episode. Together at last, they bring in a “ghost guest” in the form of Carl Trueman as they take a quote of his about the Roman Catholic Church and pontificate on it.

Trueman’s quote states, “Every year I tell my Reformation history class that Roman Catholicism is, at least in the West, the default position. Rome has a better claim to historical continuity and institutional unity than any Protestant denomination, let alone the strange hybrid that is evangelicalism; in the light of these facts, therefore, we need good, solid reasons for not being Catholic; not being a Catholic should, in others words, be a positive act of will and commitment, something we need to get out of bed determined to do each and every day.”

So the guys discuss the validity of this claim. Scott uses his lawyerly mind to dissect and clarify what the quote is saying. In turn, Kyle seeks to define and coach about its true sense. Together, they arrive at conclusions about the current state of the Protestant church and offer some of the “good, solid reasons for not being Catholic.”

It’s always good to remember why we’re Reformed! So get a refresher by tuning into this episode of 3GT!

  • Episode 275: The Shadow of Christ in Lamentations with Dr. C.J. Williams

Barry and Kyle are still searching for Scott, who is wandering somewhere out there in the political landscape. If they cannot find him, they may have to start having tryouts for a new parishioner. But in the meantime, they still put the 3 in 3GT as they are joined by RPTS Professor of Old Testament Studies, C.J. Williams, as he discusses his new book The Shadow of Christ in the Book of Lamentations.

Dr. Williams shares with the guys his purpose in his emerging series on the topic of seeing Christ in the Old Testament. He discloses why he chose first Job and now Lamentations, and why these books are important for Christians walking through the suffering of this present age. From there, he reminds listeners of the context of the Book of Lamentations and how its author, Jeremiah, is a fitting type of Christ in the Old Testament. He then goes on to give insights in how to see Christ in this book of sorrows. He concludes the episode sharing how his immersion in this book prepared him for painful events in his own life.

You will want to listen to this insightful interview as you learn how Christ weeps for His people. In the meantime, you can also learn how you could receive a free copy of this book. So tune into another edifying episode of Three Guys Theologizing and consider why you should study Lamentations with this volume in hand!

  • Episode 274: Souls by Matthew Everhard

Scott is absent once again. 3GT slipped a spot in its Argentina ratings since the last episode. But all is not lost, for the guys are joined by Dr. Matthew Everhard as he discusses his new book Souls: How Jesus Saves Sinners.

Matthew explains his desire in writing this book was to deepen gospel understanding. From there, he articulates what the soul is, what it was designed to do, and its value. The guys then discuss the work of Christ in redeeming the soul and how the church must pray and work toward awakening those around us to the soul’s true need which is found only in Jesus.

This book is an excellent resource for helping believers be better equipped in sharing the gospel and as a gift to unbelieving friends who might read a “longer form tract” as Matthew explains it. So head over to this link to get your own copies. However, if you are a listener from Argentina, send us an email for an opportunity to receive a free copy!

  • Episode 273: Bridging Denominational Divides

Scott is away, undoubtedly hot on the trail of criminals as the newly elected prosecutor. But Kyle is firmly back in his seat as a tripod-caster (or is that tri-podcaster?). And Barry is eager to record, having recently discovered that 3GT is on the Top 100 list of a South American country. So with a listener supplying the transcript of this episode, the guys are ready to talk about how to spread love across denominational lines.

First, they revisit both the necessity and the sinfulness of denominations. From there, they discuss what NAPARC is and its importance in encouraging unity and cooperation among Reformed denominations. They look at how congregations should work with other churches in their community as well as some pitfalls to avoid. The guys end by sharing principles individual Christians might follow as they seek to interact and minister with believers from different communions.

Our Lord prayed for His followers “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you” (John 17:21). Tune into this episode of Three Guys Theologizing for some practical advice in following the spirit of Christ’s prayer.
