With Mad Max Fury Road unexpectedly taking the world by storm in 2015 by garnering huge box office receipts, critical acclaim, and 10 Oscar nominations, it would have seemed only a matter of time before George Miller once again returned to the Wasteland. And 9 years later, the 79 year old Miller did exactly that.

This time, he has the Edgar Wright recommended Anya Taylor Joy as the near iconic title character, and a prop nosed Chris Hemsworth as her adversary. But the film was released almost two months ago to disappointing box office and a mixed reception.

And now, the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast has finally gotten to it. Listen to Garrett, Matt, and Mik as they dissect the (final?) film and talk about any and all points related to how Joy does in a role that Matt wasn’t too keen on her taking.

It took over twenty years to make. Its set was rife with confrontation as the two leads spent the majority of the shoot hating each other. But in the end, Mad Max Fury Road ended up shattering all box office and critical expectations to the point where it’s been called one of the best action films ever made. And that does not even scratch the surface.

Join Garrett, Matt, and Mik as they talk nearly two hours about 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. They take some detours along the way, as Mik divulges things such as rumors of Steven Spielberg’s involvement, and Matt and Garrett talk about similarities between Thunderdome and some wrestling gimmicks which were developed around that time.

Four years ago, right before the world stopped, Matt and Garrett spoke about the Bad Boys franchise with the returning Michael Guarnieri. After at least one of the podcasters got a surprising amount of enjoyment out of Bad Boys For Life, they were all under the impression that the franchise was done, deciding to go out on a high note.

But money talks, and Will Smith slaps. After slugging Chris Rock at the Oscar ceremony a couple years later, he found himself with a little PR problem. What better way to fix it than bringing the band back together for a fifth Bad Boys movie.

Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox meant they were now in charge of the Planet of the Apes franchise. So of course, even though War for the Planet of the Apes meant the end of Caesar’s story, they were going to make another one. Enter Maze Runner director Wes Ball and a brand new cast for what all intents and purposes looked like a cash grab of epic proportions called Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they gather for the tenth time to talk Apes, and look at the new film that has gotten a surprising amount of good reviews. Given their skepticism of the Disney product, do they agree? Also, stay tuned as they say what franchise they’re doing next.

In 2017, it was firmly believed that War of the Planet of the Apes was going to be the end of the franchise. Everyone from director Matt Reeves to Andy Serkis were in the press saying so. And they went into the making of War with all that intent in mind. So they went all out to make it so. The result, while not as successful as 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was still an underlying success, grossing over $490 million at the box office.

After the success of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it would seem inevitable that there would be a sequel. While greenlit rather quickly, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would once again see an overhaul of behind the scenes talent. Gone is James Franco, to be replaced by Jason Clarke (Terminator Genisys). Gone is director Rupert Wyatt, to be replaced by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield). So it would seem that the Planet of the Apes would once again have to prove to be a valuable franchise when Dawn was to be released in 2014.

Well, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes proved to be exactly that, grossing over $700 million at the box office and landing on many critics’ best of the year lists. But where do we land with it?

Though 2001’s Planet of the Apes remake proved that the property was still viable enough to make money, no one was aching to follow up Tim Burton’s film with another Mark Wahlberg starring romp. So, the franchise once again went back to the ‘we’ll get to it when we can’ pile of films.

Flash forward to 2011. Armed with Gollum himself Andy Serkis, as well as visionary director Rupert Wyatt, 20th Century Fox seemed ready to once again do a new version of Planet of the Apes for the masses called Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Though this time, they substituted James Franco in place of hunky Mark Wahlberg. The result was another success, this time with both critics and audiences.
