I've been with my husband for 14 years and married for almost eight. I thought being a mom would be the hardest thing I've done. It 's not always a walk in the park. But marriage is by far the hardest thing I've ever done. It's not hard because of the reasons that may immediately come to mind. It's hard because I have ZERO control over my husband as I do my children. I can't bark out a command or order and just expect him to submit like a child. It's also harder because the complacency within a relationship is real. Add more layers like kids, careers, hobbies, friends, etc and complacency just makes itself right at home. You have to be mindful of where you are and how you are performing within your relationship. Surviving a rough patch is no different. Many people give up too easily within a rough patch of a relationship because they think it means that you're not meant to be together. But rough patches aren't all created equally. Sometimes, we play a role in creating them because we've lost sight of our role within our relationships.

2) Customize the job description - check in on your performance regularly
