Day one of Pablo, Bill, and Tony's trek across the UK got underway beside a vast tidal estuary, where mudflats stretched toward the horizon beneath a calm grey sky. Their journey officially began at the shelter bearing the inscription, "Wallsend, 84 miles. Good luck go with you" — a fitting send-off for the miles, memories, and challenges that lie ahead. As they followed the coastal path, the landscape unfolded in front of them: open water, green countryside, and the lingering echoes of centuries of history. What had been months of planning, anticipation, and preparation was no longer an idea on a map. The adventure had truly begun. The route today follows the shoreline alongside the Firth of Forth, with occasional glimpses through the trees revealing the broad estuary beyond. Conditions are far from perfect — a damp, drizzly day with a clammy chill hanging in the air — but that's all part of the experience. tthe borderlands are putting on a very UK welcome.

Carlos here recorded a brief update for the Roman Ramblers. “I plan to edit the submitted audio recordings and produce up to two update episodes each week”. While his own project is called Three Walkers, One Wall, he noted that information would be shared through the Roman Ramblers network. I hope that the other participants cooperate with the project. Pre-Qual Audio: The Gentle Stir Before the Storm

Carlos here—checking in from a steady Zone One shuffle, just to say… lads, it’s getting real now. Your upcoming journey along Hadrian’s Wall is no small feat, and the excitement must be building with every passing day. I’ll admit, I’m a little envious—I’d love to be out there with you—but between life’s logistics, garden duties, and a roof soon to be crowned with solar panels, I’ll be cheering from afar.

Think of this as a light jog of encouragement, a prelude to the main event. You’ve got the miles ahead, the history underfoot, and no doubt a few laughs waiting along the way. I’ll be following your progress closely, hoping for clear skies, smooth bookings, and strong legs throughout.

This little interlude is just me, Carlos—the running jackal—egging you on from the trails of Mount Douglas Park. Pablo’s brother, Bill’s mate, your unofficial hype man.

This June, my brother Pablo, our old school mate Bill, and Tony are walking coast to coast from Carlisle to Newcastle, following Hadrian’s Wall the old-fashioned way — no support crew, no shortcuts, just long days on foot and a warm bed at night. they'll head east through farmland, wild ridges, and Roman stone, carrying only what they need and stopping when the legs (or Bill’s knees) say so. Each evening, hopefully they will be recording a short audio postcard: a few minutes of reflections, small moments, tired laughter, and whatever the day leaves behind. No polish, just boots-on-the-ground field notes — weather, pub tables, ancient walls, and three friends settling back into the rhythm of walking, all the way to the North Sea.
