What if we slowed down long enough each day to notice the good happening around us—and the people who are making a difference?
Life can be busy, stressful, and genuinely hard. Gratitude isn't about ignoring what's difficult. It's about putting on our “gratitude glasses” and making space to notice, appreciate, and name the good that is already happening around us.

What does it actually mean to be grateful when life is challenging?
We've all heard that we should count our blessings, focus on the positive, or appreciate what we have. But when you're exhausted, overwhelmed, frustrated, or struggling, gratitude can feel like just another thing you're supposed to be doing.
In this episode of Thrive in Real Life, registered psychologists Joel and Chantal explore what gratitude really looks like in everyday life—and how it can help us see the good without ignoring what's hard.
As Chantal puts it, “Gratitude isn't a correction of reality. It's an expansion of reality.”
Together, they explore:
Whether gratitude comes naturally to you or feels like something you have to work at, this conversation offers practical ways to make it part of real life—one small step at a time.
It's a grace journey, not a guilt trip.

Most parents and teachers don't need to be convinced that connection matters. The harder question is: Why, when we care so deeply about kids, can there still be such a gap between how we want to show up and what happens in real life? In Season 1, Episode 1 of Thrive in Real Life, Joel and Chantal explore the connection gap—and what it actually looks like to start crossing the bridge.
They get real about the things that widen the gap: busyness, low capacity, stress, our own “shark music,” correction-heavy interactions, and even the ways our personalities and expectations can clash with the child in front of us.
You'll hear practical ideas for:
Because thriving isn't about becoming the perfect parent or teacher. It's learning to notice the gap, get curious about what's creating it, and keep taking brave steps across the bridge toward connection.

Why can we know exactly how we want to show up—and still struggle to actually do it? Maybe you want to be a more patient parent, a more present partner, take better care of yourself, or handle stressful moments differently. You can see the person you want to be, but real life gets in the way. Stress, limited capacity, old patterns, discomfort, work, parenting, relationships—it can all create a gap between where we are and where we want to be.
In the launch episode of Thrive in Real Life, registered psychologists Joel and Chantal get real about that gap in their own lives and explore why knowing what to do isn't always the same as being able to do it.
Using the picture of crossing a bridge between real and ideal life, they introduce a practical five-step framework for recognizing the gap, understanding what's getting in the way, taking a step forward, staying with the discomfort, and gradually living it out in everyday life.
And importantly, this isn't about getting it right all the time. It's about approaching growth with more curiosity, grace, and a little less judgment.
In this episode:
As you listen, think about your own bridge: Where are you now, where do you want to be, and what might one step toward the other side look like?

Knowing better doesn't always mean living better.
Thrive in Real Life is a podcast about the gap between how we genuinely want to live and how we're actually living—especially when…
Psychologists Joel Pukalo and Chantal Seymour bring practical psychology, honest conversation, different perspectives, and real-life experience to explore what keeps those gaps open and what can actually help close them.
Each season takes that question into a different part of real life. Season One, Helping the Next Generation Thrive, explores parenting and the many adults who help children and young people grow—because good support isn't simply about knowing the right thing to do. It has to fit the unique child and the real adult in the room.
This isn't about getting life right all the time. It's about understanding ourselves and the people around us more clearly, taking realistic steps, and becoming more able to live what matters—more often, in real life.
