A few years ago, before my parents had passed away, I had moved back to California after my first divorce. I took up temporary residence in their house - the large 6 bedroom home I’d grown up in from the time I was 11 or 12.

It was both comfortable and uncomfortable. Comfortable because it is easy to fall back into old routines and old spaces when they are available. It was uncomfortable because I didn’t belong there. 

I didn’t belong there because, after a divorce, one where both partners spend a lot of time being sad. And one where my kids, growing up and older, were developing their own lives, friends, and activities - leaves you feeling that you don’t belong anywhere.
