I like my phone. I like the information that connects me to. I like the people I interact with. I like the ability to Chronicle certain events when necessary.

And God knows I want you to have your technology with you, at least until you've downloaded and listened to this podcast!

But I was reminded that I like disconnecting as well. Perhaps for longer periods than I have been in the practice of disconnecting over the past several years.

A few years ago NPR producer, Manoush Zomorodi, put out a podcast episode (series) titled bored and brilliant. In fact in a series of episodes on her podcast Note to Self, she advocated for the practice of disconnecting from your phone. I'll have a link to the bored and brilliant episode on my podcast page.

The idea was that in disconnecting from a constant stream of input and potential interruption you would go through a process that forced your mind to work in isolation on ideas. I more or less followed the experiment as she laid out. It was, if nothing else, calming.

Perhaps the greater work comes in the permission she needs to give herself on where to put her dream of performing. 

You see, when she expressed to me that she felt pressure to be mature and act more adult, she was pitting that idea - maturity and being adult - in contrast to performing and pursuing music.

Somehow, she sees going after her music dream as less mature, less adult, less valid than a traditional job.

I want to believe that I have not encouraged this idea. I want to believe that I have always expressed that I support her pursuing music 100%. Because, I DO!!

And that I get it because I want to do the same.

When I speak with her, I am fully convinced and believe that her pursuing music is as mature and as adult a thing to do as pursuing computer programming or accounting or any other professional path.

But then I wonder… Do I, really?

If I reflect on my own progress in my artistic pursuits, I realize that I maintain one foot in one domain and dip my toes into another.

A few years ago, before my parents had passed away, I had moved back to California after my first divorce. I took up temporary residence in their house - the large 6 bedroom home I’d grown up in from the time I was 11 or 12.

It was both comfortable and uncomfortable. Comfortable because it is easy to fall back into old routines and old spaces when they are available. It was uncomfortable because I didn’t belong there. 

I didn’t belong there because, after a divorce, one where both partners spend a lot of time being sad. And one where my kids, growing up and older, were developing their own lives, friends, and activities - leaves you feeling that you don’t belong anywhere.

Some backstory

Back in 2006, after the release of my first book, “The IT Career Builder’s Toolkit” I was presenting for a business group in Phoenix. We had relocated to the Phoenix area a few years earlier. There is a lot of pain in that story that I won’t go into now - but suffice to say - it does play  a little part in where and who I am today. 

But at this particular time - this particular presentation - I was super-excited. There is an undeniable high that comes with getting published by a major publisher. As an aspiring author, it is validating to say the least. And it had led to some nice speaking engagements and some ridiculous speaking fees.

This particular presentation was titled, “It’s On! Lessons on Life and Business from a Hyper-active Child.” It involved anecdotal stories from my child  ren and loosely connected those to some type of relevant business concept. The presentation was fun, light, and I suppose to attendees demonstrated some type of creativity. It connecting humorous and disparate stories to professional strategies on communication, sales, and passion.
