  • College Counseling
    How does college admissions really work, and how can families get through it with less stress? In this episode, Head of School Deb Otey sits down with Derek Gueldenzoph, ODA's new Director of College Counseling, to talk about the college admissions process.
    Derek has spent 30 years on both sides of the admissions table, first as a college dean of admissions and then as a high school college counselor. Together, they clear up common myths about how colleges read applications. They also cover test optional policies, Early Decision and Early Action, how to build a balanced college list, and the parent's role in supporting their child.
    Tune in for an inside look at how ODA's college counseling team partners with students and families at every step, from the first campus visit to the big day on May 1st.

    KEY POINTS
    ==========================
    College admissions is one of the biggest things on every family's mind. In this episode of Thunder & Thoughts, Head of School Dr. Deb Otey sits down with Derek Gueldenzoph "Mr. G," ODA's new Director of College Counseling. He has 30 years of experience on both sides of the admissions table. Together they cut through the myths, the stress and the strategy.
    1. Colleges don't sort applicants by GPA and test scores alone. The biggest myth is that there's a cutoff line. Most colleges use a "holistic review," which looks at the whole student, not just the numbers.
    2. Don't take admissions decisions personally. Many selective colleges say 80% to 90% of the students who apply could succeed there. A "no" usually means there wasn't room, not that the student wasn't good enough.
    3. ODA students have a real edge. As a day school, ODA gives students time for service and activities outside class. They also work with three full-time college counselors who give them one-on-one guidance, something most public schools can't offer.
    4. Test optional only works if you take the test. Mr. G's advice is to take the SAT or ACT, do a little test prep, and look at the score at the end of junior year. Then decide together whether sending it helps the application.
    5. Know the difference between Early Decision and Early Action. Early Decision is binding: "If I get in, this is where I'm going." Early Action lets you apply early and hear back early, but you still have until May to choose.
    6. Build a balanced list: likely, target and reach. A strong list mixes schools where acceptance is likely, schools where the student fits right in the range, and "reach" schools that admit fewer than 20% of applicants. It should also cover the money side, with schools known for merit scholarships or generous need-based aid.
    7. AI is showing up on both sides of the process. Colleges use AI to recalculate GPAs from different schools so they can compare them fairly. Students can use it to help build their list and even plan college road trips, ice cream stops included.
    8. The transcript makes the first impression, but it isn't the whole story. Colleges spend most of their time on everything else: sports, the arts, jobs, service and activities. They want to picture how a student will add to life on their campus.
    9. Parents are cheerleaders, not drivers. A parent's main job is support through the ups and downs, plus help with logistics like college visits. The student stays at the center of the process.
    10. Keep college from taking over senior year. Set limits, like one "college night" a week. Give students room to think after a campus visit. And enjoy senior year. Mr. G's best advice for every grade: don't rush it.

    KEY POINTS
    ==========================
    What makes learning actually stick? In this episode of Thunder & Thoughts, Head of School Dr. Deb Otey sits down with Associate Head of School Julie Bianchi — 34 years in education — to unpack the philosophy that shapes every classroom at The Out-of-Door Academy.
    1. The ODA model is a compass with four points: Vigor, Rigor, Competency, and Character. These four aren't a menu — they work together, all at once.
    2. Vigor + Rigor = profound learning. Rigor is the discipline: the scientific method, the steps, the data. Vigor is the spark: the curiosity that makes a seventh grader want to keep experimenting. It's not 50/50 balance — it's "100 and 100 at the same time."
    3. Character means doing what's right when no one is looking — especially with AI. When homework is hard and AI could finish it in seconds, the ethical student asks for help and an extension instead. The learning is the point, not the completed assignment.
    4. Failure is engineered — on purpose. From band students wrestling with a brand-new piece to engineering classes building bridges for a real audience, ODA teachers design challenges students won't get right the first time. That productive struggle builds resiliency.
    5. AI is the tool; the human is the thinker. In one assignment, students write an essay — then ask AI to attack their own thesis. Rebuilding the argument with those blind spots exposed makes the work stronger. AI is part of the process, never the thinker.
    6. Real competency means making connections across subjects — on your own. An ethics discussion in business law resurfaces in a genetics class. That "buzzing word" effect is transdisciplinary learning, and it's the highest form of critical thinking.
    7. The daily schedule is a "wellness machine." Built-in work time, writing labs, and math labs mean students go home with less homework and less stress — and parents aren't relearning calculus at the kitchen table.
    8. Warm and rigorous aren't opposites — warmth enables rigor. A student who feels safe will try hard things. (Yes, second graders were doing algebra — by hunting for "Bob." They loved it.)
    9. The payoff: self-efficacy and agency. ODA graduates walk into a changing world nimble, resilient, and hungry for challenge — because they've practiced adapting every day.
