  • School Mentoring Improvement and Coaching - SCHMIC

#015 - Ann-Marie Furney, co-founder of SCHMIC (School Mentoring Improvement and Coaching) really got my brain thinking in this conversation. We talked about how as teachers we need to be deep thinkers, so our students will become deep thinkers, which is the culture we want in any school. If we want to create a cultural change in our schools, we need to have complete teacher collective efficacy, and this is a lot easier said than done! Ann-Marie has learnt from the best to create the programs in SCHMIC so we can get the best professional development to make us the best teacher we can be!

  • Central West Leadership Academy - A 21st Century School

#014 - We all know the importance of teaching 21st century skills to our students to prepare them for the constantly evolving workplace they will enter as adults. In this conversation, my guest is Mandi Randell, who started the Central West Leadership Academy - A 21st Century School. Yes, you read correctly, she started a school! We talk about 21st century skills and just how important they really are, the challenges she faced and the successes the school has experienced in such a short period of time. Something that Mandi wants all teachers to be aware of is to not be afraid of taking on those huge, messy projects, because that's where learning happens, for us as well as our students.

  • Project Based Learning

#013 - Project based learning is a teaching method but with a real difference! A real world life difference. In this episode I talk with Kel, who has done some amazing work in this area. She is the contact person for PBL Global, an organisation that teaches teachers about how to teach Project Based Learning. So what is it I hear you ask? Project Based Learning is when,

“Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.”

  • Helping kids through NALAG

#010 - Have you ever experienced a death in the family? Have you ever lost your job? Have you ever experienced a loss such as separation or divorce? Chances are, it's a big fat YES! Can you imagine then what it would be like for a child to go through these experiences without the skills to cope? In this episode I talk to Trudy Hanson, the soon to be retired CEO of NALAG (National Association for Loss and Grief) in Dubbo, NSW. We discuss how children, who are often the 'forgotten mourners',  cope with grief quite differently to adults. We also talk about in this sombre, but very real topic, how as teachers what we can do to help these kids build coping skills and see that there is hope on the other side!

  • Work / family life - getting that balance right!

#009 - In this episode, I talk with my big sister Ce, co-owner of Centric Pilates, Dubbo, NSW. We discuss if it's possible to ever get the work / family life balance right.
A lifetime ago Ce started her high school teaching career. Due to continued high stress levels as a teacher, and struggling to find the work / family life balance, her health deteriorated terribly. As a result she left the teaching profession to pursue Pilates. Ce has now learnt to plan better, simple things like diet and exercise, to ensure she now has more good days than bad days!

  • Technology in the Classroom

#008 - In this episode I talk with Dennis who is a motivated teacher and learner of all things to do with technology. He generously shares his knowledge and honest stories of what he has tried in the classroom - activities that have taught students, engaged students and given enjoyment to students. Dennis says that as a teacher, all he needs is a device and an internet connection. He claims to be the 'almost paperless teacher'.
Dennis is a big believer in teachers and kids sharing their knowledge alike, and providing those opportunities so it does happen!

  • What teachers should know from a speech pathologist's perspective.

#007 - In this episode I talk with Emma Parkes, who is a speech pathologist in our community. She has some amazing and useful strategies that teachers can incorporate into their everyday teaching, if they are not already doing it. During our conversation, I was relieved to know that, as teachers, we are on the right track with teaching kids who need support in this area but incidentally are also helping the rest of the class. There are a few tweaks, though, that Emma suggests which can be very beneficial! I hope you get to try some of these strategies before the end of term. Good luck!

  • Behaviour Management

#006 - Management of behaviour in teaching is so important. It can determine how well your kids in the classroom will learn as well as the stress levels that you come home with. There are so many strategies out there to try, it can become confusing! The challenge is finding what works for you and your class.
In this episode I talk with Kara who has some great ideas on how she manages behaviour in her classroom. The key words in this conversation were 'practise' and 'routine' and just how important these things are to have optimal learning in the classroom.
