Joe Bastardi, the legendary meteorologist who career spans from AccuWeather's early days to WeatherBell to social media, joins the show. The focus is on his Power and Impact scale. Joe argues that the current Saffir-Simpson scale for hurricanes is outdated and we have the tools to provide a better idea of how impactful a hurricane is than just winds.
No one is more passionate about weather than Joe, though. So, the episode talks about Sandy in 2012 being classified as a post-tropical cyclone instead of a hurricane, and his Jersey Roots in Somers Point.

It's shark week at Tidal Flooding Talk! Discover how marine scientists tag pelagic sharks like makos and blues with advanced sensors to gather real-time ocean data on temperature, salinity, and heat content. This cost-effective method can outperform pricey gliders, enhancing Atlantic hurricane forecasts amid climate change. From offshore expeditions to tag deployment challenges, explore the future of bio-logging in marine research. Dr. Aaron Carlisle, Associate Professor at the University of Delaware, joins Dan, Palma and Joe to share his shark stories.

Dr. Venkatachalam “Ram” Ramaswamy, director of NOAA’s Geophysical Dynamics Fluid Laboratory (www.gfdl.noaa.gov), discussed shifting atmospheric river patterns. Research shows East Coast atmospheric rivers are increasing in frequency, impacting populated areas, while West Coast events are decreasing. These changes, linked to climate patterns like El Niño, affect precipitation, flooding, and water management, with models improving predictions.

In a riveting discussion, Amy Wicks, owner of Wicks Consulting Group (https://wickscg.com/) unveiled the hurricane-proof marvel of Babcock Ranch, a Florida community defying storms. Nestled 20 miles from Fort Myers, it boasts solar fields, water storage and an underground power grid ensuring uninterrupted electricity. By mapping natural water flows and raising uplands, Babcock Ranch channels water through wetlands, making the town flood-proof.
Amy’s innovative strategies, blending resilient infrastructure with native plantings, have inspired municipalities to rethink codes, though developer enthusiasm lags. Amy’s vision for storm-safe communities shines as a beacon of hope against intensifying hurricanes.

Mayor Michael Collins of Margate, NJ, right at our Jersey Shore home, addressed Margate's persistent coastal flooding. He's advocated for tailored, cost-effective solutions rather than a single fix.
He commended the New Jersey Coastal Coalition for resource-sharing and emphasized post-Hurricane Sandy building code changes, raising homes for resilience, despite altering the town’s character. Effective coordination among city departments and multi-platform communication, including social media, were crucial for public awareness. Collins stressed educating residents, especially newcomers, about flood risks.
Margate has maintained its Class 5 Community Rating System status, securing a 25% flood insurance discount through FEMA-compliant construction standards.
Recap the month of weather that was. It's all Jersey, with two of Jersey's best weather guys. New Jersey State Climatologist Dr. Dave Robinson as well as Meteorologist Joe Martucci, owner of Cup A Joe Weather and Drone take you through the temperatures, rain, snow, coastal flooding and much more every episode.
