Jesus’ #1 rule

Jesus came into a world full of religious rules. And perhaps his most controversial move he announced that he was replacing them all with ONE NEW COMMAND. Just one. This command drove the early church and continues to drive followers of Jesus and churches today (at least that’s the idea). This week we go back to the beginning to look at what Jesus taught about the way followers of Jesus live.

Changing the rules

When you think about who Jesus is and who his first followers thought he was, there’s one idea or theme that stands head and shoulders above all others: they thought Jesus was the “Messiah”. “Messiah” isn’t a word or idea that most of us think about in the 21stcentury and it would be easy to ignore “Messiah” and read something else. But if Jesus said it was a big deal and if his biographers (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) all say it’s the main reason they wrote Jesus’ biography in the first place, then maybe we should learn a bit more about what “Messiah” means for us.

1. What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word Messiah?

2. How would you explain the idea of Messiah to a friend?

3. If I believe Jesus is Messiah then how does that impact/change how I live my life?

The future looks bright

Do you ever think about what happens after you die? Jesus did. He talked a lot about heaven and eternal life. But for Jesus and his first followers, understanding and believing in heaven and eternal life wasn’t just about what happens after you die … it affects the way you live now, in this life.

Changing the rules

Jesus talked a lot about the way people should think about and treat other people. And he didn’t just repeat old laws and rules. In fact Jesus laid out a whole new set of ideas and rules and then he looked at his followers and said … follow. Jesus expected followers of Jesus to … follow Jesus. Today we explore what that all means for us in the 21stcentury.

Show me the way

In a world full of ideas about God and ideas about how to connect with and access God, Jesus comes with a radically different message. He doesn’t come saying “let me show you the way”, but rather comes saying “I am the way”. Today we explore what that means for us thousands of years later. Spoiler alert … it means something pretty awesome!

Good news for ALL people

Series: Jesus: all grown up

Jesus hung out with all sorts of people. Jesus healed all sorts of people. Jesus called all sorts of people to follow him. It’s not an accident … the gospels writers go out of their way to show us that Jesus was radically inclusive: proving that the angels were right when they said that Jesus would be “good news for ALL people”.

Look what the postie delivered

People had been waiting thousands of years for the first Christmas. But when it arrived it wasn’t what they were expecting … in fact it was so unexpected most people missed it altogether. Today we take a fresh look at the unexpected coming of the ‘saviour’ and ask what Jesus birth means for us today.

Lost treasure

Today we explore a short story Jesus told about losing a coin and the hunt to find it. It’s a story Jesus tells to explain one of his core messages, one he repeated often … all people are valuable to God.

Buried treasure

Many of us dream of bring rich or famous or super-talented. We want to build inspiring careers and great families. The truth of course is that many of us feel pretty ordinary. Paul has good news for those of us who feel that way. Paul says that every Christian has something valuable inside us: he says it’s like we have treasure inside us, and that treasure is the glory of God.

Treasure Hunting

Discovering buried treasure – or maybe winning the lottery – how cool would that be? One of the word pictures Jesus used to talk about life with God is the word “treasure”. Today we dig into that idea and ask ourselves what is faith and life with God really worth?
