I ask her questions about George MacDonald tackles wonder and skepticism through his stories (especially this one!) and how we can learn from his wise words. We're back for another storytime with Sophie! This time, I explore the deeply true and profound themes found across all seven books of Harry Potter. We'll look at how Rowling deals with death, love, sacrifice, fate, and more...and ultimately, I think, we'll discover that Harry Potter resonates with our hearts because it reflects the truth of our own story...the story of our whole world. 10/10 an incredible series!

In this episode, we talk about mystery. Mystery has been something we, as a culture, have shied away from since the Enlightenment. However, mystery in the world is unavoidable. We simply can't understand everything. We argue that it's worthwhile and good to embrace the mystery around us, and rest in our trust of the Lord, who stands above and outside of the mystery. Children seem often to have an easier time rejoicing in mystery and pursuing a joyous curiosity. We want to approach the world in the same way.

In this first story-focused bonus episode, Sophie discusses "The Ickabog" by J. K. Rowling. "The Ickabog" is a deeply profound fairy tale that points to the power of false narratives (PR gone wrong!) and their far-reaching and devastating consequences. But, even as the story dives into the very depths of evil, it provides a hopeful answer in the end. Just like in the book of Proverbs, the wicked fall into the very traps that they set for others. A 10/10 good book recommendation.

In this episode, we talk about celebration. Celebration happens quite a lot in Scripture, but it's not as an important of a rhythm in a lot our lives today. There seems to be a disconnect here. God clearly prescribes celebration for His people, and He actively partakes in celebrations. Children generally seem to have an easier time celebrating, and they celebrate in a way that is far richer and fuller than that of many adults. We want to learn from them, because a hope-filled life is one full of good reason for celebration! God made a good world, and He made us in His image. We were made to rejoice, even now, in the midst of brokenness. 

We talk about hope a lot here, especially when it comes to the hope we have in the resurrection. But, we wanted to pause and talk about what genuine hope looks like, not just for the future, but in the here and now. Living a life of hope means living a life of action. It doesn’t mean we twiddle our thumbs just wishing for things to get better...it means we put our faith and trust in our King and do something.
