  • Kevin Kelly - The Technium Superorganism
What if the Internet wakes up? Wired Magazine co-founder Kevin Kelly discusses "The Technium", a global superorganism composed of 13 sextillion transistors, 5.4 billion users, and 2.5 quintillion bytes of daily data transfer. These are key metrics for today's internet, but The Technium is more than the sum of its parts.
The Technium is a vast interconnected network of technologies that evolves and adapts like a living organism, which Kelly calls the "seventh kingdom of life". In Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of life on Earth; Futurist Byron Reese proposed a the superorganism "Agora" for human life, and The Technium is humans and technology together.
In "Holos Rising", Stewart Brand differentiated The Technium from Gaia and Agora, writing "There are pace differences, with Gaia slow, humanity faster, and the Technium really fast. They are not replacing each other but building on each other."
The Technium is artificial in nature, composed of people plus machines, but is it a product of natural selection? Ray Kurzweil suggested that evolution is outpacing biology, making machine intelligence an inevitable endpoint.
Kelly has written about New Minds emerging from the Technium. Does this include Artificial Intelligence and augmented humans using of brain implants from Neuralink & Synchron that blur the line between human and machine? Does the internet serve as a nervous system for this superorganism, and could it be a New Mind as well?
Kevin Kelly is the founding executive editor of Wired magazine, co-chair of The Long Now Foundation, a membership organization that champions long-term thinking, the founder of the popular Cool Tools website, which has been reviewing tools daily for 20 years, former editor and publisher of the Whole Earth Review, and the author of multiple best-selling books about the future of technology.
Kevin is a writer, photographer, conservationist, and student of Asian and digital culture. His writing has appeared in many national and international publications such as The New York Times, The Economist, Time, Harper's Magazine, Science, Veneer Magazine, GQ, and Esquire, and his photographs have appeared in Life and other American national magazines.

  • William Munizzi - Quantum Computing & Many Worlds
Google says its new quantum chip indicates that multiple universes exist - are they correct? William Munizzi discusses Google "Willow" and the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.
Per Wikipedia, Several authors, including Everett, Wheeler and Deutsch, call many-worlds a theory rather than an interpretation. Everett argued that it was the "only completely coherent approach to explaining both the contents of quantum mechanics and the appearance of the world." Deutsch said that to call it an interpretation "is like talking about dinosaurs as an 'interpretation' of fossil records."
If the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics is real, the parallel dimensions exist, and quantum computers can access them to perform calculations. This may explain how Google's quantum Willow chip can perform calculations that would take a leading supercomputer 10 septillion years, which is longer than the age of the universe.
IIf the Many Worlds Interpretation of QM is validated, it may have larger implications to our understanding of the universe. Bryce DeWitt claims that Everett, Wheeler & Graham "do not in the end exclude any element of the superposition. All the worlds are there, even those in which everything goes wrong and all the statistical laws break down." In other words, a diverse number science-fiction worlds from TV shows like "Sliders" become plausible.
William Munizzi is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). His research surrounds various mathematical aspects of quantum information and high-energy physics, with a primary focus on entanglement, quantum algorithms, quantum sensing, and error correction. William received his PhD in physics from Arizona State University, where his thesis explored foundations of quantum information, and their interpretation in quantum gravity.
William is particularly interested in the dynamics of quantum computing resources under the action of operator groups, as well as high-energy applications of various quantum properties. His research has recently expanded to include optimization of entanglement-based quantum networks, and the design of quantum sensing arrays for improved particle detection.

  • Wayne Phelps - New Jersey Drone Mystery
RPA veteran Wayne Phelps offers insights into the growing mystery of drone sightings over the state of New Jersey, and discusses technical, legal & psychological factors driving the current rash of reported sightings.
Lt. Col. Wayne Phelps (ret.) is the author of "On Killing Remotely: The Psychology Of Killing With Drones", which explores human decision-making in a future dominated by Artificial Intelligence & automation.
Wayne Phelps is a retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel and author of “On Killing Remotely: The Psychology of Killing with Drones”, available at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08L4LNL7R/.
During his military career, Wayne deployed five times, including two deployments to Afghanistan and two deployments to Iraq. He was amongst the first conventional troops on the ground in Pakistan after 9/11. He also participated in the initial invasion into Iraq in 2003 and the troop surge into Afghanistan in 2010. He commanded units at every level from Platoon to Squadron, served as an instructor at the Marine Corps’ premier aviation training squadron and a staff officer in the Pentagon.
In 2014 he was selected to become an RPA pilot and he attended the Air Force’s Undergraduate Pilot Training becoming the first Marine honor graduate. His last assignment was as the Commanding Officer of Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron Three (VMU-3) in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. As the Commanding Officer, he deployed four remotely piloted aircraft detachments to conduct counter-terrorism operations against violent extremist organizations.
We start out by exploring the evolution of the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator Drone into the armed MQ-9 Reaper, and some of the psychological effects associated with flying an armed vs. surveillance aircraft. We also discuss some of the advantages & challenges associated with remotely piloted vehicles - and perceptual changes from flying remotely piloted vehicles in crews assigned to them.
Drone aircraft are the beginning, and we explore how the cost & safety benefits of RPV's are being applied to tanks & land vehicles such as the Milrem TheMIS, Ripsaw M5 Robo-Tank, Miloš UGV, Gladiator TUGV, Foster-Miller TALON, and more. We also discuss robotic platforms such as the the GNOME, FEDOR, and well-known Boston Dynamics Atlas.
Great Britain and the USA are both exploring Artificial Intelligence to allow drones to decide when to pull the trigger themselves, which takes the ultimate control of warfare out of direct human hands and moves people into a planning & oversight capacity. Is this a good thing, and what does it mean for remote killing machines if they can operate autonomously?
In the space of 20 years, we’ve gone from remote piloted surveillance aircraft to fully automated killing machines that make their own decisions about combat. This is a slippery slope to an uncertain future and it is worth discussing the meaning of these changes to warfare now, rather than later.

  • Gerald Q. Maguire, Jr. - Brain Implant Technologies
Dr. Gerald Q. Maguire, Jr. discusses Neuralink, Synchron & the future of brain implant technologies themes from his paper, "Becoming Borg to Become Immortal".
Last year, Neuralink implanted their first patient with a brain implant, and rival manufacturer Synchron has already enrolled six patients - forcing us to confront the question of whether brain implants have different moral & ethical concerns than other parts of the body, or do they highlight existing ethical questions that haven't been adequately addressed?
Dr. Maguire and co-author Ellen McGee wrote "the potential of brain implants to change and significantly affect humans is potentially far greater than that of genetic or drug enhancements", because implants open the door to new information, whereas genetics & drugs can only improve what's already there.
Brain implants are a miniaturization of information technologies we already use - like smartphones & wearables. Over time our digital appliances have gotten smaller, and Maguire argues that they will inevitably become part of bodies - and in a sense, we will become part of the Borg.
Dr. Gerald Q. Maguire, Jr. is Professor Emeritus at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Dr. Maguire has a Bachelors in Physics from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a two PhD degrees in Computer Science from the University of Utah.
