In the culminating hours of his earthly life, Jesus gives his disciples (then and now) a big-picture understanding of his mission played out in them and through them. It won’t be easy, but he has never asked us to trust in the ease of discipleship. He always gives us his presence and power along with his promise of surpassing victory.

In what would be Jesus' final public teaching, He contrasts the noise and flash of the revered religious leaders with the quiet sacrificial love of a poor widow that gave all she had - mere pennies! What does it look like for us in our world today to beware of religion that is a mere show? How might we follow the example of the poor widow and of Jesus himself who gave it all?

When Jesus encounters the question about the most important commandment, his answer explores ways that we can extend great proof and evidence of our faith in our lives. The simplicity of his answer also underscores the primacy of the love we first received from God and then are intended to extend to a lost and desperate world.
