John Newton illustrated obedient service this way, If two angels were to receive at the same moment a commission from God, one to go down to rule earth’s grandest empire, the other to go and sweep the streets of its meanest village, it would be a matter of entire indifference to each which service fell to his lot, the post of ruler or the post of scavenger; for the joy of the angels lies only in obedience to God’s will.

Why do many seem to think it’s okay to sit on the sidelines and watch others do the work of the Kingdom? Do we even know what we are missing out on?

Believers must understand that service is a costly proposition. God doesn’t just ask for one’s time and talent, He asks for one’s life. Service to God and others should be a priority to believers, not a hobby or pastime. One’s leftovers are an insult to God and the responsibility to serve is a life-long commitment.

There is no greater way to live one’s life to then to live a life of service for it is God’s grand calling for every believer. We must understand, though, that that calling may involve doing what may be considered by many as the mundane or even the “demeaning” things in the eyes of the world. One theologian wrote,

In some ways we would prefer to hear Jesus’ call to deny father and mother, houses and land for the sake of the Gospel, then His word to wash feet. Radical self-denial gives the feel of adventure. If we forsake all, we even have the chance of glorious martyrdom. But in service we are banished to the mundane, the ordinary, the trivial.

“Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the Gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this Gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the Word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Peter, and then to the twelve. After that, He appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of who are still living, though some have fallen asleep” (1 Cor. 15:1-6).

In part 2 of The Principle of Sharing, Dr. Gonzalez looks at verses 3-5 and discusses the essence and substance of the true Gospel we are commanded to share. In this message, we are reminded of how critical it is that we see and understand everything being said in these few verses.

Many of you remember the game called “Simon Says.” What does “Simon Says” have to do with following Christ? Even though that was a childhood game, the fundamental rule is quite applicable to our pursuing Christ. As Christians we need to be engaged in a very real and serious lifelong activity called “Jesus Says.” That is, we need to be listening and following Christ.

In The Principle of Following, Dr. Gonzalez covers three critical points. In part 3, he covers the third critical point, that in following Christ we must make a decision that supersedes every other decision. This truth is clearly illustrated for us in Luke 9:57-62 in the exchange that takes place between Jesus and three disciple “wanna be’s.”

As we consider our own lives, are we really following Jesus, or are we allowing something to hinder our pursuit of Christ? You see, if we are not following Jesus the way we should be, we are not truly pursuing Christ. we must deliberately choose to follow Jesus; it is an ongoing decision we must make every day.
