It’s the Season Four finale for Time Signatures, as host Jim Ervin welcomes an incredible woman of the Blues, Grammy nominee Janiva Magness. The Blues Foundation’s B.B. King Entertainer of the year in 2009, only the second female artist to be so honored, along with Koko Taylor, Magness shared deeply powerful stories from her youth and life in the Blues, including her father denying her to chance to see the Beatles, her baptism into the Blues, and those first concerts with Otis Rush and B.B. King. She spoke of her difficulties establishing herself in music, due to a dark relationship she had at age 19, her need to be part of music, in some form or fashion. But it was the serendipitous moment with Sid Page that set her on the path to the career that has unfolded since. We also talked about her latest album ‘Back For Me’. So much more….way too much to list here. There simply could not be a more captivating episode to complete Season Four than this one. Enjoy!

This week on TIme Signatures with Jim Ervin, Erv welcomes Manx Blues guitarist, straight from the Isle of Man, Davy Knowles. Davy dropped by to talk about his early years in music, largely influenced by the likes of Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, and Robert Johnson. It was the Dire Straits’ Sultans of Swing that first bit Davy, and after a few guitar lessons, he chose to take the self-taught route….and the rest is history. The ensuing trail took him from John Mayall and Eric Clapton’s ‘Beano Album’, to Peter Green’s era with Fleetwood Mac, and ultimately landing on Rory-and he was off to the races. It was a fun chat, covering some of his early work with his band, ‘Back Door Slam’, and ending on his newest recorded work, ‘The Invisible Man’. We have just one episode left in Season Four….any ideas who it might be? Enjoy!

Just three episodes remain in Season Four, and this week, host Jim Ervin welcomes 17 year old guitar and harmonica phenom, Kiersi Jolie. Kiersi was in Michigan not long ago for a Women In Blues Showcase, held at the legendary Token Lounge in Westland, MI. Join us for a discussion about her early start in music, first taking on the piano at age 3, and the harmonica just a few short years later. She is a Hohner endorsed musician, and if you have not had a chance to see her live, you owe it to yourself to take in a show with her at your earliest convenience.

It’s the month of June and we have just four episodes remaining in Season Four. Our guest this week is one of many Michigan musicians who have made their musical chops in the Greater Detroit area. New Baltimore native, Michael Hishon, aka ‘Michigan Mick’, released his first album ‘Big Leg Woman’ in 2024, and he stops in to talk about it in detail, along with a discussion about his baptism into the Blues as a young man on a hot Sunday night in the attic, when he turned on the family’s Zenith radio, and happened upon a gospel program with music from Mahalia Jackson and Son House among others. He also had great stories about his first contract to record on a label at age 18, albeit short lived, his work in the automotive industry and lots more. Be sure to check out his album after the interview, won’t you?

This week on Time Signatures with Jim Ervin, Erv welcomes some true Blues Royalty. Shaun Murphy began her career, of all places, on the main stage at the 1969 Ann Arbor Blues Festival! In 1971, she teamed up on Motown’s Rare Earth label in a group called Stoney and Meatloaf (yup, THAT Meatloaf!). She has had touring stints with the likes of Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, the Moody Blues, Bruce Hornsby, Coco Montoya, and many others. She has also been part of the rock musicals ‘Hair’ and ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’. The multi-BMA nominee and Grammy nominee drops in for a lively discussion about her incredible life in music, her album ‘I’m Coming Home’ and what lies ahead. It’s an amazing program you do not want to miss!

This week on Time Signatures with Jim Ervin, join Erv as he ‘travels’ to Clarksdale, Mississippi for a fun chat with another legendary Bluesman, Deak Harp. Deak traveled up and down the east coast in his early life, following the James Cotton Band and that dedication turned into an opportunity to drive Cotton’s bus. But it also allowed Deak to get to know James on a personal level, and ultimately he got a chance to be on stage with him. These days, you will find Deak working at his world famous ‘Deak’s Mississippi Saxophone & Blues Emporium’, where he performs custom builds on Hohner Harmonicas. Oh, and if you do drop in to 13 3rd Street, ya just might run into the likes of Charlie Musselwhite, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top fame, or a host of other incredible harmonicists who just drop by for a chat and some music. Want a custom harp for yourself? Lessons? Yeah, he offers those, too! It’s a fun chat, so don’t miss it.
