Timeless Advice on Controlling Anxiety and Mastering Life

Listen Later

Sometimes I wish that the subject line came with instructions for preparation before consumption. As in, “season the above with a dash of hope and bake in a sauce of irony. Do not eat until cool”.  Or something like that. Because the ideas that all our anxieties can be controlled or life completely mastered may be compelling aspirations, but they are unlikely to become fully realized experiences. In light of that, what shall we make of some of the “all or nothing” religious ideas we may have grown up with surrounding challenges like handling anxiety and worry? At a time where those experiences are garden-variety common, it feels like this might be worth some consideration. That’s what I’ll be digging around in on Sunday, aided by some timeless advice from the 1930’s.

Speaking of Sunday morning…we’ll be gathering in-person! 10:45 a.m. at Justin’s place. If you need an address, you can reach me at this email. I’m working with the assumption that most of the folks receiving this email have seen that info before, or know where Justin lives. We’ll start things up with music and Community Time, and then the Talky Bit will follow. As has been our practice when meeting in-person, there will be no ALA online afterward. However, TWEZH will be happening on Wednesday evening at 7:45 p.m. I’ll put the URL for that zoom event at the end of the blurb. Also, we’ll be live-streaming our Sunday gathering, and you’ll be able to find us online here starting at 10:45.
And a quick word about how we’ll be handling the “to mask or not to mask” issue and related matters when we gather in-person. I expect this will evolve as the circumstances surrounding us do, so watch this space for changes. Here’s our starting point. Baseline assumptions – be vaccinated and be well. If you’re sick, stay home. As far as masks go, expect to wear one when we’re mingling before and after. When we are seated, the choice is yours. I’ll add some more nuance to this when we gather in person, but the core value remains caring well for one another, which includes both respecting choices that are different from our personal preferences, and also having conversations that help us understand one another’s perspectives and concerns. In consultation with our Leadership Team, and informed by people in the community through our recent survey and personal conversation, this seems to represent a workable way forward under the present circumstances. Let’s give it a try and see how it goes. We’ll adjust as necessary.

Next Sunday will be online only. April 3rd is scheduled to be in-person at the Plett house. Watch this space for details going forward, but know that we’re aiming at that every-other-week-live rhythm at this point. I’m excited to see some of you in person on Sunday. It’ll be good to be together!

Peace,

Tim Plett
