With the emergence of third party emulation devices being released for the last five years, the largest game companies like Nintendo, Sega, and Sony thought it would be a good marketing ploy to release their own. The hook is to produce their legacy consoles but a fraction of the size but cost as much as the originals' price.

As gamers we want to play our video games on the go, anywhere anytime. This is where handheld gaming devices came into play. Nintendo was successful with their Game and Watch line up with a generation of gamers playing and exchanging their devices as they see fit. The next move would be having a cartridge based device to capitalize their success with the Famicom and NES.

So in 1989, Nintendo released the GameBoy DMG; their first cartridge based handheld device spearheaded by Satoru Okada and Gunpei Yokoi. Despite the critical reviews despite the technological limitations of the time, the Gameboy still outsold the other handheld competition due to its durability and battery life.

In this episode of Timeless Gamer, the crew is joined by the founder of GameboyPH Jay-Ar Apilan to discuss their fondest gaming experiences with the Dot Matrix Gaming device.

As the Console Wars of the 90s was dawning, Nintendo released their 16-bit system in 1990; dubbed the Super Famicom in Japan and Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the west. This console was Nintendo's weapon to battle againts Sega's Genesis/Megadrive.

In the mid 1980s, the North American gaming industry came to a crash as the market was over diluted with poorly designed videogames, lack of gaming reviews and regulations, and abundance of gaming hardware.

Learning the mistakes of the west, Nintendo; a japanese company would release their own gaming system accompanied with a diverse library of sofware in 1983. The Asian market would receive the Nintendo Famicom while the rest of the world would get the Nintendo Entertainment System soon after. With this move, Nintendo effectively revived the entire industry and raising a new generation of gamers.

TIMELESS GAMER Season 3 | Episode 34

In the winter of 2005, Sony released the company's very first handheld gaming device to combat Nintendo's monopoly over the western market. Sony's PlayStation Portable or PSP was generally considered as a critical success and the better handheld gaming system againts the Nintendo DS. In its 10 year lifespan, there were over 1300 games released for the PSP.
