President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to EFF leader Julius Malema’s accusation during the debate on Ramaphosa's opening of parliament address that he is a "sellout".

In his opening of parliament address on Thursday, Ramaphosa announced that the seventh administration will continue with the implementation of the NHI, saying that he was confident of ensuring buy-in from opposing role players.

MPs in at least four parliamentary committees where there was no interpretation provided for languages besides English and Afrikaans did not take kindly to the failure.

Convicted killer Luyanda Botha has failed to have a decade-old attempted rape case against him struck from the court roll. 

Botha appeared in the Wynberg magistrate's court on Tuesday where he is on trial for the alleged attempted rape of a 21-year-old nursing student in 2014.

The former postal office worker is serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of 19-year-old University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana in 2019.

Former EFF MPs Kenny Motsamai and Patrick Sindane have joined the Patriotic Alliance (PA). This was announced by the party’s deputy president, Kenny Kunene, at a press briefing on Thursday.  The former EFF members expressed dissatisfaction with the EFF's stance on illegal immigrants.

The high court in Pretoria found that some of the Life Esidimeni deaths were negligently caused by former Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and former mental health director Dr Makgabo Manamela. 

Judge Mmonoa Teffo, who headed the inquest, handed down judgment on Wednesday afternoon.

The inquest was investigating who was responsible for the deaths of 144 patients in 2015 and 2016.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says the strike by Gautrain workers will continue indefinitely if no meaningful offer is made.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA)  initiated mediation between Numsa and the Gautrain operator, Bombela Operating Company, to resolve the strike which began on Monday.

The mediation will take place on Wednesday.

The electricity minister says there is plenty of electricity but [ordinary] people cannot afford it amid tariff increases.

He said the ministry will be aggressive in tackling energy poverty.

He told the media the country has reached “energy poverty” where people can’t afford the cost of electricity. His comments come after 100 days of no load-shedding.
